But it also has disadvantages. Due to the nature of DnD (post once, everyone else playing posts once and then it is your turn again), the OT forum presents a problem. A non-bumped thread falls off the front page within a few hours. With players spread out around many different time-zones, the game will be all but guaranteed to never be on the first page.

          Lazy...

There are many ways to directly link to threads you care about... deal with it. If people really care about the "game", they will find it. Add a link to your favorites if you are too lazy to look on page 2 or 3

But if the majority of players then find the thread by "my thread" or bookmark, then that gets rid of any advantage the thread may have had by being in the high-traffic OT forum.

If they post to it, then it will be back on the first page again... you know... that high-traffic place

IMO, a new forum is not needed. Those who are having trouble finding the thread can stick a link to it in their sig and check it after every 30th post (on second thought, that's probably to often, perhaps every 60th post )

Again, use the "My Threads" feature. When it is bumped, everyone can see it.

Sorry Skanky, you're fighting a lost cause.
