You're right, John, I don't have a converter board. I will, however, admit to being a cheap SOB.
I recently had a similar problem with one of my desktop computers running Win98 hanging during shutdown. It turned out to be related to my wireless network software. It automatically mapped network drives to the other desktop and the laptop. I had to unmap those drives, then it was fine. (The other desktop and the laptop have no problem with mapped network drives - go figure.)
By the way, I've used the DirectCD software (I think) in Win98 with no problems.
