There is an alternative to obliterating your last base when outnumbered and cornered:
Resign , save the game, reload the game , end the turn, save again and pass on the turn as usual. The difference here is your faction has been turned over to the AI.

That is a good suggestion John Paul Jones. The bizarre thing with that scenario is that a year is skipped for everyone in the game for some unknown reason. It's not a big deal since it is the same for everyone, but you will just have to keep a close eye on your build queues with a year being skipped.
