Running A Data Angels faction option up the flag pole
Maybe I'll start a vaguely militant hacker sub-faction within the Angels, the Society of Minerva or something (Societas Eruditorum references anyone?).

I like the Lal quote about information too: As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.

This is looking much healthier. Some significant new potentail Angels.
Waiting confirmation of the Mercenary mottos of complete neutrality and not seeking to dominate or become a
(obvious) threat.
If they skimp out on me, though, I'll be joining WIA over in the Spartans...Pending the Morganites decision to
worship cash through mercenarism as well...
Good question ? don't have a complete answer. I don't think we will become an obvious threat. Our mercenary pedigree is well understood though but I imagine the faction might wish to discuss the 'dominate' theme if for no other reason than to insure the free flow of knowledge and information.

On the ISDG 2012 team at the heart of CiviLIZation
I'm looking for a completely neutral team that will IDEALLY only engage in actions, military or otherwise, if they are hired to do so by another. I'm willing to bend somewhat on that point.
Also IDEALLY, they would not neccessarily be SEEKING victory, but would not complain if it found it's way to them either. Again, I am willing to bend on that since I wasn't around to propose it at the start. Stupid RL kept me away. (selling house and moving...)
It's a theme I've been working on and hope to perfect eventually through team games.
One who has a surplus of the unorthodox shall attain surpassing victories. - Sun Pin You're wierd. - Krill
I think, unfortunately, that that would finally be decided upon after the new game is started... though if you join the Angels, that's certainly a viable option for them and would mean that others in the faction would more than likely go along with the idea.

I've been thinking this idea. An obvious drawback for SMAX to practise this concept is that you cannot gift bases to another faction. In other words, a faction cannot hire us to take an enemy base for it.
However, what we CAN do, is to provide assistant in battles, especially our specialty - probe teams. Also, we could be hired to steal techs, causing drone riots, subtage researchers, etc.
Also, we could make it a goal that we will not seek victory by conqure. If it happened that we transcended before anybody and before the end of the game, it is all good. But we will not attack anybody just for our own victory.
Be good, and if at first you don't succeed, perhaps failure will be back in fashion soon. -- teh Spamski
I think the AI will have to be an issue as we come to them... if we can easily encorporate them into our information distribution network then by all means I think we should... though making them subservient would probably be better.
