However only the #rules and #units are carried through - the other items don't. So, for example, if the CMN wanted to give base defenders 200% AAA bonus that would happen for all players in that PBEM, but you wouldn't see it in any other game you play

Are you sure the #RULES Section gets applied to the PBEM's? I thought it was just the #UNITS that gets imprinted.

Regardless, my solution to being able to play both regular SMAC(X) as well as with a modified alpha(x).txt file is to do a second loading of SMAC(X) onto my D; drive, and then create a shortcut onto my desktop for each version. FYI.

What will happen if somebody come in late in the game and he plays a turn without realizing all the modifications he has to do? Will his choppers be able to fly 8 squares and pay a surprise visit to his enemies? Or will he crash the game or something?

I do the same thing, its a snap. It takes less then a minute to set up, just duplicate your SMAC Directory and create a second shortcut call it "ACDG". Make shure you place the saves for the ACDG into the correct folder (or else you wont see them when you load from the ACDG Icon). Likewise load your other PBEM games into your original SMAC directory. Then play the turn as normal, save, zip and send. You can use as many differnt variations as you like.

That means we need to partition the hard drive into two drives yes?

No the hard drive dosent need partitioning, you just have the whole SMAC Folder duplicated (I am asuming most of us have 300 MB free to do that if not go spend 20 Bucks and get a bigger hard Drive). As long as the File pathways are differnt (like giving the duplicate a differnt name or placing it on your Desktop) their will be no interference.

Oh and if you dont already use it, get the no CD exe from

And place it in both directores (and make new shortcuts to them) so you can Play SMAC on a whim without changing CD's

If one has SMAX, then he/she can always play SMAC without using a disc. Full SMAC install is necessary for SMAX.

I don't have any experience with multiplayer scenarios, but I know that for a single player scenario, ALL the changes of the alphax.txt in your scenario directory are carried through into the game, overriding the alphax.txt in your general SMAC directory. Do you know why that isn't so for multiplayer scenarios? If we could find out why, perhaps we could invent some kind of work-around.

The easy solution is for the CMN to disable all the crossfire SP's - the CBA, Manifold Harmonics, Nethack terminus and the PEG - that way we'll be playing smac but with the Angels as a faction and with the neat facilities, weapons and armor that smax has

                      Sounds like an excellent idea.

Easy solutions are fine by me.

Like I said, modifications in the scenario editor are fine. Its just I don't want to arse around with a dual SMAC install.

Is it so hard to copy/paste SMAX directory? I have four different versions and four shorcuts to each already.

I agree that we should take the easy solution. Just disable the CBA when we start the game...
