those who wanted techs to expand into the future could enable the "Next War" - Mod and play the game with a tech tree that streches into the future and lead futuristic units.
Those who just wanted the standard techs, just had to play the "normal" game.
Nevertheless, as I am one of those people who prefer to play with the "Next War"-Mod (and loved Civ:CtP for its huge tech trees) I am looking forward to the GDR
(although I hope that Civ V will also include a Mod similar to "Next War" either in the basic game, or in one of its expansions, so that I will again be able to play far into the future )Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I would have rather seen a modern phalanx unit armed with titanium tank-piercing spears...now THAT would be a 'nod to the community'.
Seriously though, this has been asked for and has been a running joke for years now. This is a NOD to the civ community, a way for Firaxis to say "we're there for you guys, believe it or not. See, we got this past QA."!Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10

Agreed. It is a private joke between the community and Firaxis... Very cool.
But I want a button or something to turn the GDR off... If not, I'll beg to you, modders, to tell me which lines I should erase to eliminate it...
I know it's not so simple...

Mod-ing units has always been very easy with civ. It'll probably be the same with CIV 5.We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Btw, the mod idea is better.

I suck, anyway. It's beyond my control...
But the whole point here is having fun...

If a Next War mod isn't included, I'd be inclined to start working on one (as long as I actually like the underlying mechanics of Civ5, and actually have some free time.)
Completely agree with the above posters -- if the unit comes too late to do any good, there's no point in it. And it's a bit cartoon-y. Its only salvation will be if it truly adds something good to gameplay. (And on THAT, I will reserve judgment until I see it in play!)"The nation that controls magnesium controls the universe."
