I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

High Men--the magic immunity of the Paladins makes them awesome. I agree with aaglo that Trolls' regeneration ability rocks (their Swordsmen and Shamans will wipe up the battlefield with the equivalent units of any other race), but their population takes forever to grow, and the useful choices are limited (why would anyone build War Mammoths?).
"THE" plus "IRS" makes "THEIRS". Coincidence? I think not.

      Nomads so far.

I like their speedy rangers and horse bowmen. Plus the rangers pathfinding ability is very handy.

I like the halflings because of their speedy growth and food production. Also you can get their ultimate unit-the slinger, fairly early.

Plus even their spearmen(8 figures), with the lucky attribute are fairly decent when they are elite.

I vote dwarves. They give lots of gold, get double bonus from gold/iron/mithril etc. and have tough units. The hammerhands are especially good and come pretty fast. Golems are useful against black mages, but not outstanding. I really love the double gold revenue.
Also I like highmen for the mighty paladins, and nomads for their mounted archers and hippogryphs (fly/first strike - excellent to tear up paladins). It always does some good to conquer one or two halfling towns in order to get lots of food.
As for races that suck, I think klackons come in first. They cannot build any decent temple, and are always unhappy. I feel barbarians are too limited as they don't move fast and aren't as tough as dwarves, so slingers mow them too easily. And beastmen never seemed to be worth much, even though their minotaurs are cool, they take too long before you can get them and are too slow.

Barbarian race actually is good. They have thrown weapons and grow fast (which isn't that important). But they have thrown weapons. And they can build warships. And they have THROWN WEAPONS!!! For example, take elite spearmen... they have strength 2 or 3 thrown, add adamantium, flame blade and ZAP! it has gone to 6 or 7! Now 8x7 = 56... and that's before melee combat, before first strike.... And you can attack flyers also...

                Allways remember - THROWN WEAPONS...

Draconians. I like their flight ability. I tend to like to get out and explore my map pretty quick, and that helps. The fire breathing is also pretty nice.

                      DWARVES, DWARVES, DWARVES, DWARVES!!!

                      Realy cool race.
                      Especialy Hammerhands.

                      My combo:
Take Warlord and lots of Chaos books.

And Chaos Channelled Wings (if lucky) are best thing to give to Hammerhands.

                      P.S.
                      Klakons are not so bad.
They are good if you know how to play them.

My only problem with this combo is that you have already used five spellbooks to get dwarves and Warlord.

                        2 for Warlord.
                        3 for Myrran.

                        That's to many for me.

                          Dwarves DON'T need heavy magic.

                          And...
You can still get 6 Chaos books.

You can get even more by combating Nodes.
(I got at least 3 Chaos books that's way)

That's true, I suppose, but I prefer to spread my magic out a little.

But given what you have, I'd reduce to 5 chaos books and take one life.

                            Why?

I hate death magic and doing this prevents you from ever getting any.

Plus, healing is the most important and beneficial spell in the game, IMHO.

                              Hmm,

How often you get Heroism with 1 life book?
