I have a comment on movement speed. I agree that the sprint speed of a Helo is definitely faster than the sprint speed of a tank, but don't forget that the shortest period of time you'll ever experience in Civ III is a 1-year turn. The movement should incorporate the "drag" of having to establish feuling/reloading/maintenance areas as they progress across the world.

If they are made air units, then range is all that matters, and that should be compared to the range of fighters and bombers in the game.

If they're land units, however, I think 3x speed w/respect to tanks would be far too much. There are, of course, an unlimited number of arguments/explanations/scenarios to back up any particular point of view, and I don't have an answer as to what the movement "should" be, but I think it should probably be given a movement derived from game balance rather than one derived from top speed comparisons.

The AI uses the helicopter OK when its used as a 'land' unit I think, though some more testing would be useful.
It dosen't seem to use non-immobile setting air units, which would make the helicopter work better perhaps.

So, everyone here is in agreement that the attack chopper should be a land unit...
Pardon my French, but this is BS!!!
The chopper/helicopter/whatever as an AIR unit and should ACT like one.

I've game tested my own preferences and here they are, entitled "A beginner's guide to add units":

                              1. Download the CopyTool (found in some thread) or EVEN BETTER download the hacked Civ3Edit found here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...threadid=31594

                              2. Download the ZIP file with the animations (FLC) and the images (PCX) found at the top of this thread.

                              3. Download the attached file that includes the missing graphics/sound files and wait for the next posting...

                                Attack chopper Full continued

                                ...

                                4. Here's what you do with everything you've downloaded:

                                i. Create a directory (folder) in Art\units\ called Attack Chopper (path=[install dir]\Civilization III\Art\units\Attack Chopper)
ii. Put the contents of BOTH zip archives there
                                iii. Copy '66AttackChopperlarge.pcx' and '66AttackChoppersmall.pcx' to \Art\Civilopedia\Icons\units

                                5. Now for some text editing:

                                i. Edit (using Notepad) 'PediaIcons.txt' found in \Text\
                                Add the following after
                                art\civilopedia\icons\units\65privateersmall.pcx

                                #ICON_PRTO_Attack_Chopper
                                art\civilopedia\icons\units\66AttackChopperlarge.p cx
                                art\civilopedia\icons\units\66AttackChoppersmall.p cx

Make sure that the line following your additions is:
                                #End Units

ii. In the \Text\ directory open Civilopedia.txt
Find #PRTO_Helicopter in the Civilopedia. Place your cursor immediately after ...operations. and press Enter 3 times (two blank lines). Copy and paste the following at your cursor's position:
                                #PRTO_Attack_Chopper
                                ^
                                ^
^[Attack Choppers] are formidable air units. They travel quickly uninhabited by terrain and are the only air units that can attack and destroy other units or, alternatively, use their missiles to perform bombing and precision strike $LINK.
                                ^
^They also have a handicap: After their turn is finished they land (or 'barely' hover if it's a sea tile). When landed they are completely defenseless against ANY attacker. Make sure that when this happens the chopper is either in a city or is well protected from enemy forces (incl. barbarians!).
                                ^
                                ^A city needs $LINK, $LINK and $LINK in its $LINK
box to build an [Attack Chopper].
                                #DESC_PRTO_Attack_Chopper
                                ^
                                ^
^Almost all modern land armies rely on attack helicopters. They are fast and can cause significant damage to presonnel and infrastructure. However, their strength relies on their ability to 'hit and run' so they must be combined with and supported by, other land forces.

                                6. Let's go to the units thingy:
Download the ZIP attachment and replace your units_32.pcx found in \Art\units. This image includes the attack chopper and air transport to the units list. It also incorporates the "number of upgrades" notice found in this forum i.e. all unit icons have got a small number on their upper right corner. This number indicates the number of upgrades for each unit (your new units are 'modern era' so they can't be upgraded). This is a VERY udeful feature (did I say congrats to the person who made this?)

...Think that's all... Well almost in the next posting watch how you can modify the unit's attributes and read about the downside (there's always one, right?)
