Any city next to a fresh water source (may just be a river, I'm not sure) doesn't need an aqueduct to exceed size 6, though a hospital is still necessary to advance past 12.

Hey, Alex, how about a map based on Mars if it still had its oceans?

My future world map will be up in a few days ... it still has a long way to go and since its the weekend and my girlfriend is in town, work is going to be kinda 'slow' to say the least ... if you get my drift
*LOL* and yes, my girlfriend reads these posts and she will kill me soon ... so how about this!IF YOU DON'T WANT JOANNA TO KILL ALEX SO HE CAN CONTINUE TO POST MAPS HERE, LET US KNOW!!!
These forums are too much fun ...
ANYway ... Your Mars idea is a very good one ... moving away from the Earth is something I'm looking in to ... But I want to cover the basics first (past, present and future). If you have any ideas about a Mars map Granicus, then by all means post 'em and let me know!Input is vital ( as I think i might have mentioned once or twice
), and I'll be sure that when I get around to making it, you'll be the first to get your hands on the map to playtest it and tell me what you think.
As for now, Joanna and Alex are going to bed after our movie/fireplace lounging night ... Sleep well everyone! (although I know most of you are still playing Civ 3 even though it might be 3, 4 or 5 in the morning where you are)
Good Gaming!
Cheers ...

Anyways, I've found some websites that might be of use. The first two would go together, being topographical maps of Mars coupled with a short description of where the waters would flow. The third link is to a site dedicated to a trilogy of books centered around the terraforming of Mars. It has a really good map that shows the oceans as they are in that book series and has the elevations colored for the rest of the land. It's very nicely done.
Here they are for your viewing pleasure:

So far one complaint- I began on some island as the Russians- an island with a total of maybe 10 hexes- I'd really remove that starting position due to the fact that anyone who starts there is screwed as you can only build just one city there and there's no about 4 prereqs for Map Making.
Also, in random map games that I've played I've found that you can take a different course of victory no matter your starting location and still be successful ... One map I played I was in the middle of the ocean with no way of accessing land until the middle ages and the naval advances therein. I played the game from start to finish with only 5 cities and I won a Cultural victory because my capitol accumulated the 20k in Culture required.
I find that bending your strategy given the starting location and terrain is one of the things that just make the game all the more interesting, and your victories all the more rewarding
Good Gaming, and thanx for your comments!

That's really interesting- and yeah, I agree that every path *seems* viable- I still haven't tried for a diplo victory yet.
I believe it was probably Japan I began on, but with the lack of places to build I'd get stuck with only one city (maybe two if I squeezed) until I secured galleys to transport me across the Sea of Japan.

I played this map as the aztecs starting in britan.
at first I was kinda bummed, I saw a bunch of other guys gobbling up europe and scandnavia. It was around 0 AD that I finally got map making and really got to contact other civs.
I was able to make contact with a civ every now and then when they strayed into my view.
after about 500 AD I really started to dig this map and being in england.
it's kinda realisitic, the britons didn't have that much contact with the rest of the world until ceaser invaded. so it felt right.
starting in england is tough at first because you are isolated, but later that turns into a big advantage. kinda like it's supposed to, historically

Rock on, Thaddeus! You're a true cartographer. I'm looking forward to your "Future Earth" map. I've also wondered how changes in sea level would affect the look of a world map. Have you ever noticed the still perceptible riverbeds branching out on the floor of the Indian Ocean from the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent? Makes you wonder if the sealevel was once much lower; some scientists think it was.An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile,
