  • MAP: A New Look at the World

    Hey all

I've seen and played every world map that has ever come out for Civilization games (that is, every one that i've known about), and although they are all fun and interesting, they are ALL THE SAME !!!

Oh, I know ... differences in accuracy and such ... but honestly, does it really matter? The world becomes so generalized when its divided into a series of tiles that making a perfect map is, in my opinion, quite impossible.

So I set out to do something different

Below you'll see a screenshot for my Huge map of the world ... The first thing that should strike you as being .. 'odd' ... is the view. I'm getting sick of this typical map view, and I wanted to change it. Now I KNOW what all of you historians out there will say - that the view makes no sense, that landmasses aren't proper and so on and so forth (i studied history and geography, trust me, i know !) ... but the IDEA (and this is the important part) behind the map was to CREATE A MAP THAT RESEMBLED THE EARTH for that FAMILIAR FEEL, but to make it FUN and INTERESTING TO PLAY ON.

IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, JUST READ THE REVIEWS THROUGHOUT THE THREAD

If you download this map, please try it out and let me know how you felt the game progressed! a simple or is fine, but any info you can give me would be great ... I'd be glad to alter the map if you find it is too unbalanced for one faction, if there are problems with waterways and the like .... just let me know!

This is my first map that made it to the "complete" stage (for Civ 3 at least) so be honest ..... I can take it !

    Good gaming all!
    Cheers
    ~Alex

      Which size has the Map?

Its a HUGE map, with 16 starting locations (basically historically accurate)

I should also note that there are no barbarian huts preset on the map, but minor tribes exist.

        Enjoy!

                          Pangea

You people are way ahead of me

I just got back from the local library and took out a few books on the evolution of the earth's climate and the continents ... Pangea will be my next project and for my third map i'm going to another World Map but I'm going to base it on ideas on where the continents will lie 10 000 years from now, and what parts of the world would be submerged in the event that the ice caps should melt ...

                          Think its a good idea???

I'll post my Pangea as soon as i get it done and keep everyone posted on my future world map as well ...

Keep yer stick on the ice everyone!
                          Good gaming ...

                            PS!

oh yeah ... I forgot to reply Gaius Marius

To answer your question, I have not yet seen the AI move to antarctica, but I haven't played past the map past the industrial ages ... If they do, I assume it would be because of the fish, but I put them there just in case someone wanted to create a small outpost city on antarctica ... The sheer abundance of resources everywhere else on the map seems to attract AI expansion close to the equator (which would be the equatorial curve in this map) and thus away from the dead south.

If people see their games going awry because of fish around antarctica, then I'll gladly remove them and with such a small amount of food, I doubt the AI will inhabit the continent.

Of course, I could always delete it as well ...

alex, on a crazy, funked-out map like that, who cares if the Ai inhabits Antarctica? i say throw some game and a some serious mountains (it does have very serious mountains) and let us live on all seven continents! besides, it would be the final touch to what really looks like a fun game to play.

                              nice map!
