    Sumeria--Game Update

Took Dutch city of Den Helder in 1710.
Dutch love their cavalry. On average, I keep killing between 7-10 each turn and yet they keep coming back.
Now have 6 Armies--added a 2nd Cavalry. Have to come up with names for the 4th Crusader & 2nd Cavalry Armies. Also have enough Cavalry to start a 3rd.

    Modo44,

I had to start on the Dutch. They caught up with me in the tech race. I had 4 Industrial Age techs that they didn't have, and they had 4 that I didn't have. Since I had Replaceable Parts and they didn't, figured the time was right to cut them down in size a bit.
How you stayed at peace for so long is a miracle. The Dutch kept trying to make in roads into Sumerian territory, and from your save they succeed in yours with Leerdam in your rear.

I have one question. How did you get the Civilization's name in the city name box??? For example, [Kish (Sumerian)] or [Amsterdam (Dutch)].

It's an option in the Preferences menu, called Color Blind Help.

Starting in 30BC, I did the following things (listed basing on importance):
          • got the terrain improved ASAP (a horde of Workers and careful management thereof),
          • got basic infrastructure rushed ASAP (No research for a while, all cash into rushes, buying Granaries, Courthouses, Libraries, Harbors, Temples, Aqueducts, Marketplaces),
          • filled the spots in the north, getting all 3 local Luxuries ASAP (thus lowering the Lux slider),
          • got contacts ASAP, to start selling technology (This turned out to be of lower importance than expected, because on Regent level the AI doesn't have too much money to pay for technology.),
          • built no units for a long time and had cities grow fast, thus staying below the free unit upkeep of Republic,
          • signed ROPs, so the AI would like me,
          • after cities got to size 12, micromanaged citizens for better production and replaced Irrigation with Mines, so that no food surpulus was left.

We're now about to enter the Industrial Age, still with a tech lead. The Dutch seem intimidated by the Sumerian military (didn't demand anything for a looong time now), but we're preparing to take them out, should they get some funny ideas. Got all luxuries from across the ocean for some outdated technology. Almost nothing left to rush (Colosseums not needed, will serve as prebuilds for Factories). All Sumerian citizens are happy. Almost all cities are on unit production now. Started preparing more Workers in anticipation of Railroads. Switched to Democracy and built Smith's Trading Company lately, so I'm starting to have trouble burning all the cash I get. No point rushing units, since I'm not going to war... not unprovoked...

          Save 1300AD.

Most have over-looked that (Preferences). Thanks.

If and when you do tangle with the Dutch, they love the mounted stuff. Watch for SOD's. I gots lots of MGLs because of Dutch SOD's.

Well, i did get in a war with dutch. I went back to about right when i got the Glibrary and started up.

I had a stack of 20 about 7 knights 4 medieval infantry 2 pikemen 7 trebuchet's but the dutch had huge amounts of knights that just kept coming .

Possibly I should have waited till a stack of 40 till i attacked. Perhaps I will go back and call off the war and attack maybe 10 turns later with a larger force.

Ugh, this one got late. The Dutch had a really big territory and I had slow moving units. They couldn't stop me, but it was going paifully slow. I'll write it up tomorrow morning, because I'm falling asleep now. Here's the save containing the new, doubled in size, Fascist Sumeria, 1585 AD.

                    Tarsus Daily News Exclusive

                    Tuesday November 23, 1730

In a daring pre-dawn attack, the Sumerian 2nd Cavalry Army (Gilgamesh's Galloping Ghosts) razed the Dutch city of Zaragoza to the ground. The Dutch had used the city as a staging area for their cavalry assults on Leerdam. Dutch opposition was fierce. 2nd Cavalry estimates loses to be at 40%. In the attack, 2nd Cavalry destroyed 2 divisions of Dutch riflemen and captured 4 engineering battalions.

In other news, Dutch ironclads were sunk while trying to bombard the port of Septum. Artillery units were sent to Septum at the request of Gen. Lugalbanda. "When the Dutch sailed into the harbor, they were met with a tremendous barrage," says the General. "Our guns are more powerful and have a longer range. When the barrage ended, 2 ironclads were in flames". Privateers in port at the time of the attack finished off the Dutch ships. Sumerian ships reported minor damage. Gen. Lugalbanda reports that 3rd Crusader sustained light casualties from the Dutch bombardment.

                      SBC Breaking News

We go live to Geraldo Enkidu, are imbedded reporter traveling with the 4th Crusaders (Templar Knights of Kish).

This is Geraldo Enkidu. I'm with lead elements of the 4th Crusaders and we can see the church spires of Dordrecht. The 4th was given its marching orders as soon as the last Dutch counter-attack was broken at Den Helder. There were no Dutch forces to be seen during the march. I am also getting reports that a general advance has been ordered. Sumerian forces are also converging on the Dutch cities of Gouda & Delft. If Dordrecht & Delft fall to our boys we will be a 3 days march from Amsterdam. Back to you Fzoul.

                            Have fun.

It all started back in the year 1405 AD, when the Dutch declared war on the Byzantines. The attack was unprovoked and let to much international concern. In case of Sumeria, no more new trades with the Dutch were conducted and we refused to prolong the ROP agreement. In hope of turning the tide of the war, Byzantium was given cash to spend on units. As it turned out, they also used it to pull other nations into it's war. The Dutch were not afraid of it, because only countries from across the ocean appeared ready to help the Byzantines. For now.

The longer the war progressed, the more Sumerian people wanted to stop it. The once peace loving nation was slowly becoming xenophobic in regard to the Dutch. First voices could be heard, calling for a war. Too keep his face in front of the public, the President ordered an expeditionary force to be stationed in Hittie territiry (close to their border with the Dutch) and signed a Mutual Protection Pact with them. What he didn't foresee was the military leaders, who have been slowly preparing to overthrow the government.

In the year 1525 AD the force (74 units), consisting of all Sumerian Cavalry, support Infantry divisions and many Artillery batteries, approached the Dutch border. Meanwhile at home, heavy riots were started. The leaders of the expeditionary force took matters into their hands and attacked the Dutch, pulling many other nations into the fray.

But before any others came into play, Sumerian forces were already pushing hard into the enemy territory. Using the fact that the bulk of Dutch forces were back in Byzantine lands, the first Sumerian claims were indeed impressive. However, the aggressive push cost the lives of many, especially in Cavalry regiments.

(Some more infantry sits both to the left and to the right of the screenie. Didn't fit into the 800 pixels. )

After the first success of the attack was made public, the new military government was established firmly. Thus, in 1540 AD, Sumeria became a Fascist nation.

The riots cost the lives of many Sumerian citizens mostly those that weren't considered "pure blood". The northern Dutch city of Leerdam was nearly sacked when angry Sumerians charged with firearms. Somehow there just "happened" to be open armories in nearby cities and somehow the Artillery wasn't guarded from the mob as well as it should be...

With a government established and factories back online, a war plan was devised, to coordinate the efforts of the Sumerian war indstry with the military. It has now become clear that military leaders didn't seek to keep the Dutch at peace with other nations. Their desire was to conquer the whole country.

All conquered cities were to be connected quickly by a Railroad network. Also, a military Railroad was built for the Sumerian forces through the Hittie territory, to channel the reinforcements.

Green arrows are the first phase - current primary goals.
Red arrows are the second phase - conquering major Dutch cities.
Blue arrows denote the last battle planned - the taking of Amsterdam.
