GTPoompt, just looked over your 1460AD save.

Question??? Why haven't you taken out the Hittites???

Why didn't I take out the hittites?

      At first I didn't think I could.

Anyway I was about to stompt them, but then the dutch attacked .

I figure after I succesfully (hopefully) eradicate the dutch i'll take the hittites.

But I was pretty scared when the dutch attacked, the hittites gave me an alliance with them vs. dutch for free..... so i decidd to take it. So far though, i've taken all the cities while the hittites keep getting attacked by dutch.

However, the problem with the industrial era is that it switches mostly to a defensive type war until tanks//marines. So i'll probably try to take more dutch cities. Wait a bit then stomp everyone else (because I have a lead in tech.

Possibly even switch to communism. Which will give me lots of support. (and isn't the corruption a little lower due to no distance from capital + the secret police)?

I may also go back to about 600 AD save and start from there again. And take out hittites and avoid war with the dutch. I was playing pretty sloppy due to large test tomorrow and I was up studying . Couldn't sleep, so why not civ 3

GTPoompt, since you've progressed much farther than I have; I'm currently at 960AD--hope to post another save at 1070AD or Industrial Age, whichever comes first.
Use these posts of mine as sort of a Civ mentoring guide. Analyze and compare what I did with the same game to with what you did. It will help you later at the higher levels.

Try to monopolize the strategic resources of oil, aluminum, rubber and uranium. If you do, the AI's (all 10 them) won't be able to build modern weapons--at least those that need fuel and no nukes. You still will face Tow Infantry and Marines. But since you will have Bombers/Stealth, Mech Inf, Tanks/Modern Armor, you will have and easier time taken them out plus you will be the only one to build the spaceship parts.

Until my next post, good luck.

Okay, here it is. 1070 AD. #1 in science. The Dutch are real SOBs. They sent 3 stacks of ten (combination of Knights--one stack; and 2 stacks--7Med.Inf. & 3 Swiss Mercs.) Got 7 MGLs when the dust cleared. Holding off researching Gunpowder since at least 2 AI's have. Going the other direction since no one else is. Got 3 SGLs for my efforts--one to rush Sistine, one to rush Copern, & one to initiate a Scientific golden age.

          1460 next post.

That is not true. If your are skillful enough to build Knights Templar, those Crusaders loaded into an Army is very powerful--2 attacks/turn. Coupled with Cavalry--movement 3--also in an army, very deadly. Remember, these units cannot be upgraded, so stick them in your first armies until more powerful units appear.
Also, don't dis the Guerilla or the Infantry units. Many of the AI's won't have the cash to upgrade to these units, so their cities will still be defended by pikemen or rifleman. There have been numerious times when I used these units in combination with artillery and Ironclads & Frigates (softens the enemy up) to take out cities. In your game, when I finally reach Industrial Age, I'll try to post a couple saves to show you this. One post before attack and one after. How does that sound??

Good luck and keep the faith.

Further, add an Infantry to a 2xCrusader Army (among other examples), build the Mil Academy, and you've got a SuperTank.
The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

Did someone mention Grog? Oh never mind, the reference to SuperTank set me off on the wrong path.

Or do it the old fashioned way. 20 Infantry, 20 Artillery, 5 cavalry. Approach cities through rough terrain. On your way bomb every enemy with Artillery, kill any wandering weakligs with Cavalries. Slow, but simple to do and deadly.
                  Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

                        Maybe this will help:

If you load an army with all units the same type and supposing those units are 6/3/3 (i.e. Cavalry) then:

                        Attack bonus with:
Neither Pentagon nor Military Tradition: (6+6+6)/6 = +3
                        Pentagon only: (6+6+6+6)/6 = +4
Military Tradition only: (6+6+6)/4 = +4 (rounded down)
Both Pentagon and Military Tradition: (6+6+6+6)/4 = +6

With Pentagon and Military Tradition, assuming you load 4 units of the same type into each army, the net result is to simply double their attack and defense stats, because the bonus is (4*X)/4 = +X Which makes a 4-Cavalry army into a 12/6/4 unit.

                          Thanks

                          So:

The basic divider is 6, and it becomes 4 with Military Tradition?
Also, the bonus is applied separately to the defense and offense values?

In other words, in my current game my army of 4 Gallic Swordsmen is:

                          (3+3+3+3)/6 =2
                          (2+2+2+2)/6 =1.5 (rounded down)

So its full stats are: 5-3-3, right?

That must explain the military success I've been having with it!

Armies are very powerful and are basically the only way to win at the highest levels.

                              Armies

Is it a bug or something the programmers overlooked??? The AI NEVER use armies.
I'm glad they don't, but it would be nice to have my armies go up against one.

Well, I've been out of the Civ scene for a bit... finals coming up no time for civ (i can't believe i said that ) I will play as ai get the chance

Isn't the chance for a MGL 1/12 compared to the 1/8 for being militaristic?

so then thats actually a pretty big deal... but i suppose you really only need the first leader to make an army and you're set.
