conquests--unit balance even more absurd? resources?
I am sincerely glad that you have fun with your game. I can assure you, that I have fun with mine too. An older game, iirc from 1999, and still supported. Quality!
Sir Ralph is the main issue for you the lack of resources? If so why not make up maps every chance you get for a few weeks that have enough to suit you. Then after a bit of time passes they can be played with little fear of prior knowledge.
If you have some other concerns that cannot be address, then I understand.
Well, the lots of bugs the game has, that spoil the fun? AI armies, stealth units, barbarians to begin with? AI city placement, tile improvement, other disappeared PtW AI tweaks? Resources, which make war obligatory and screw not the human, but the AI?
This game is in a sorry state and certainly not worth my time. Spare time is a scarce resource, you know. Don't waste it with something that makes you upset instead of enjoying you.

Yes, but by Nathan. Even Theseus can be excused for that!

You aren't forced to read my posts. The forum has an ignore feature. I am as free to express my opinion as you are.
No no no, that's not my point. I respect your right to an opinion, your right to not like the game, and/or to think resources should be different. I've never suggested otherwise. But you yourself state that your time is a valuable resource, and that you clearly don't like the game. So I just don't understand why you continue to make such negative posts and take the time to do it. Those here I think DO like the game, and generally speaking people would rather have suggestions for improvements (or mods, etc) than put-downs.
Having said that, I will give you the last word on it, which I'll read like I've read the others. I won't reply, though, and will let this drop.
Sir Ralph is an entertaining curmudgeon, though, so I don't mind.
The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.
Great. Either be a fanboy and praise everything, even the bugs, or bugger off. Something I didn't hear on these boards for at least 2 years.
I am here because I like the game and it buggers me greatly, that its support has been dropped in such a feeble state. And I have bad news for you. I won't go away. You can solve your problem by clicking this link.

Well I wasn't GOING to reply, but personal insults have changed my mind. I won't bother going into detail about how I know the game isn't perfect, but am comfortable I have my money's worth (and have posted EXACTLY to that affect). Nor about how it seems some think they get THEIR opinion, but then others don't get the same privilege. Or give personal insult just because they can.
So I'll do the next best thing - I won't bother coming to Apolyton, where apparently a dissenting opinion isn't appreciated. Looks like I'll just go to CivFanatics, where the whining is less and the advice just as good.
And feel free to take another cheap shot, since I won't be around to respond. I'd expect no different.
Personally, I think Iron should still be needed for Pikes & Knights. I'd agree with dropping it from factories and railroad. The high quality Iron needed for Pikes & Knights wasn't universal in the early portion of the middle ages.
I'd also keep the oil and rubber requirement for modern era units.

Iron: Remove it as a requirement for everything other than the Ancient Era combat units that need it. So, whether it is pikes, knights, factories or railroads, iron shouldn't be needed. But for creating early iron swords (much better than copper), it SHOULD be needed.
Why? Because historically, once the pioneering technologies matured, it was available practically everywhere. Actually, Aluminum resource more represents a technology than "metals" also. Yes, strategic resources should only be required in the era of its introduction.

AI: I sure wish Jon would hurry up and complete his turn, he's been at it for over 1,200,000 milliseconds now.
All I can think of is, that he took the sentence ("either be a fanboy or bugger off") not as quintessence of his earlier post directed to me, but as attack against him. Admittedly he said it more polite. But I am used to call things by their true name. I will call a "buggy mess" a "buggy mess" and not a "great game worth my money, with tiny flaws". And I perfectly can understand a "bugger off" as "bugger off", even though it's expressed as "why are you wasting your valuable time here".
