Well, I say good for furrykef for the project, and I hope not everyone responds quite so discouragingly as Vince278. I'm not sure the link is working right, though.

It wouldn't be the first time I had a lukewarm response to such a thing. There's a website called the Power Tab Archive (http://www.powertabs.net/ - really great place for guitarists and bassists) which has its own wiki...not just a wikibook, but an entire wiki on the website. I don't own the wiki but you could say I run it; I'm a sysop and created maybe 95% of the content if you include both administrative and actual content. Yet peope on the forums still ask me "What the hell is a wiki?" :P Really, nothing can discourage me. Besides, since a wiki isn't a one-man project, even if I did, somebody could take it back up later. I just think it's more efficient to do my part to get it done sooner.

I suspect interest will heighten with the release of Civ4, since of course the wikibook will cover it when it is released. (I guess that'll be a compelling reason for me to buy it!)

I'm not sure the link is working right, though.
I'm not sure, but it looks like links on the Apolyton forums are b0rked, at least for me. The link should definitely work if you copy and paste it, or type it directly, into the browser.

Roger that. I just wasn't sure if he was still around here.

May I suggest something? I would just stick to ONE game. Not any more.

Your concern is understandable considering each game has enough idiosyncracies to make each one very different. But I really do think they share enough in common that certain basic principles apply to all games (for instance the information currently in "the basics"), although the amount of information that applies equally to all games may admittedly be small. It would be silly to duplicate this for a guide to each game -- and I think each game should eventually have its own guide (there are still a few Civ1 and Civ2 die-hards out there!), so why not just put them all in one place?

Remember, over time a larger and larger number of people will be working on it, even though right now it may be mostly just me (although there are already one or two edits by other people as well). but in any case we can get very substantial information on SMAC and Civ3 done very quickly, especially if Velociryx consents to using his guides. Why stop there?

And Apolyton and a lot of other sites do kind of the same thing. Here we have our Civ2 section, our SMAC section, our Civ3 section...why doesn't the site just cover one game?

I do think I see what you are saying, but I don't really think it really applies...if you have more to say about it, though, well...do!

I just received permission from Velociryx. SUCKER! (Just kidding. ) I will begin integrating information from the SMAC guide soon. I've also added some information on Civ3; it's likely that we'll focus mostly on these two games for the time being. Civ1, CTP, CTP2, and Freeciv have the lowest priority on my list, but of course anybody's free to start writing them.

As AU Dean, I am allowing you to use all of the information from that area of the site.

Putting a copy on Apolyton wouldn't be a good idea because it would be a "hard" copy. The value of a wiki is that it can be edited by anyone at any time. Either Apolyton would have to mirror the wikibook or link to it. Of course it could get its own wiki, too...

Didn't mean to appear that way if that was the way people took it. I was the one who suggested AU afterall. I'm just afraid this could go the way of other similar well meaning projects. People have short attention spans unless you keep the interest level up.

With all the info from AU and Velociryx available in a nice, digestible package -- one that is constantly evolving and improving -- I don't think this can go very wrong now.

This sounds like a great idea!
I'm not so sure it will really fly with Civ3 or any of the civ's already released because there is already such a wealth of knowledge. I do believe that this could be implemented towards Civ4 very succesfully!

I think that the wikibook is a very cool invention. Must've taken some creative thinking to come up with it. I only wish they had named it something "cooler". lol
