"One thing that puzzled me why why so much land was exposed behind the city?
Well about the only thing I do well is explore. I had like 2-3 units other than the worker that I sent in 3 directions."

The year was 3950BC and no units were in sight, so what units could have been out scouting? That is why I was confused. But I maybe just forgetting what the exposed land should look like at that point.

No you are correct I thought you meant in the later version.

You must not of seen this post after I realized what you meant.

Oh wait a sec. All that area was shown because I settled with a goodie hut in my boundry. When it settled they gave me a map of their region!!! Thats why I had exposed so much on the first turn

Ok if you get a tech from a hut it will not be the one you are researching. Two reasons people like to start with Pottery is it is cheap to research and it give access to granary. Now if I pop a hut for a tech it will be one more expansive than Pottery. NOt to mention I stand a good chance of running into a civ that has Pottery and can trade for it
So I should research pottery first then hope to get a godie hut with something more expensive??? Thats what the first half of this paragraph sounds like your saying BUT at the end it sounds like your saying wait and get it on a trade?

That is the best way to go.

"So I take it you took their capital. How do you disband a city and what does that mean? That you gave it back for them giving you 4 techs?

I can rarley get one tech when I make peace with a civ!!! Much less 4. Wow!!!!

What did you use to take their cities archers or warriors?"

I did not take the capitol I just threathened it. The reason they would give all they had was they had lost 3 cities and many units, plus 3 or 4 settlers. That is very stiff so early. The AI was not capable of seeing I could not take the capitol at that time. Unless I sent all I had.

The peace offer was I kept adding techs until I had all they had and then I added a city and they took it. Now that I think about it the list had two cities, so that probably means they had 2 plus the capitol. So I did not give them anything back.
I went to the city and selected abandon. Mainly because it was too far away and had nothing in it and was in crappy land. So it is just rubble now.

So the amount of tech was a fucntion of beating them like a dog and them having it to give.
They had it to give as I did not research first tier techs and they prpbably busted lots of huts.

I used two warriors only, but fought individual units, except the first battle. They only counter attacked once with an archer and I was lucky the vet won and went elite. That was the only archer I faced. My thinking was it was a free shot. I was solid at home and I was hurting them.

"With those bonus squares. Do they work like mountains in the fact that if they offer a shield does it offer your attackers a better defense?"

You could save that. It has one shield just like a hill, but it has an exra food. I am not sure about defense, but I doubt it.

I should have thought of that. I was wondering why I had found only one hut in area. Later I found two in the middle of the island

This is situational. I would say it is often best to go that route. Take Pottery as it is useful and cheap. If you find out you have a civ close by and they will trade you Pottery, then fine. Take it and research something else. If you are not able to get it from someone, then no harm done.

I suspect most feel they would rather try to pop a more expensive
tech, rather than research it themslef.

I played out to 1100bc to match yours and will send it to you. Starting to expand with 9 cities and two settlers ready to land and one more one turn away.

I screwed up and built the Mousoleum thing and trigger a GA, what a dummy. Oh well no big deal. So three wonders build and Great Lighthouse started. Still have not use the leader. Iron is far away as are horses. Researching Lit now. No other wonders available to build, but GL willbe soon. Giving a GA, that should be easy.

Oh a worker is roading the only luxs I have found, so that will help. Allowing Cap to use more than 6 ciizens. I will have to revist the lux slider to see if that makes sense now.

                      Question about colonies

                      Hi all

                      Another question on my behalf:

In my desperate need for coal & oil I invaded babylon and maged to take a few key cities with the resources right next to them.
However when i tried to build a cololny with my worker i wasn't allowed to complete the action of building colony over the resource
                      Possible solutions:
                      1. the worker was a captured one...
                      2. the resource was still in enemy teritorry.
                      3. I pressed the build colony button and i dont know where to press next to complete the action (the adjacent city?)

                      Thanx in advance

You cannot build a colony in someone else's land. If you have a colony in neutral territory and your or an opponent's Cultural Borders expand to include the tile the Colony is on, the Colony will disapear and the resource will become available to whichever civ's Cultural Borders encompass it.

Also, you must have roads connecting your Colonies to
                        your Capital.

                        No road = no Colony.

I have done this for oil in a CivIII game way back when. I cranked out a settler and dropped him in a spot the assured the borders would cover the resource. Now all I have to do is road it, protected. In my case it was on another land mass, so I need to make an airport or hook to a city with a harbor. I forget which I did.

vmxa I was messing around with settings and got into a game. I didnt think I was going to continue it but I started doing real well. So I dont have any early saves of the map.

I think I might win this one by points in the time limit. BUT I dont think I could win it any other way. I dont see how you guys have any other victories. I have like 40 cities and im no where near any of the objectives. I have one city that has about 5000 cultural points BUT no where near the 20000 needed. I own only 16 percent of the land mass BUT it seems like alot more. Point wise im in second place but the celts (first place) is getting ready to go bye bye. My troops are on their capital and I just took their horses away......looking for their steel and then its all over.

I had a good start in it and built fast and attacked fast....took out 2 civs early.

As for the qustion earlier about colonies???? Do they contribute to your populations??? If so how much?

where is the disband button in the city view????

I don't think colonies count as pop nor do radar towers. To get big numbers of culture in a city you need to get that temple ASAP. You need to builld a number of wonders in that city and hopefully ancient ones.
I would think 5000 suggest nither happened. I would expect to have a number of secondary cities at that level by the end of the game. Total culture should be in the 6 digit range.

You can select units from that view and right click to see the disband option (this is off the top off my head). Same as from the advisors screen.
