Jon Pertwee was the Doctor when I first started watching (showing my age here!), but Tom Baker is the Doctor. The bloke is just as eccentric in real life; he started out as a monk but didn't like the celibacy / abstinance from drink aspects of his vocation, so he became an actor

Tom Baker? Yup, that would be the Doctor that I know. One of the scenes that's still stuck in my head is after the Tardis appears at some 1980's airport totally in plain sight. So what does the good doctor* do? Well, get a newspaper to check the cricket scores of course!
So delightfully British and eccentric.
