Sir, as every civilized (sic) nation knows, beer should be served piping hot!

Nothing much happening - a couple more cities are getting close to famine.

      REB FLEET SUNK!

      Union fleet fights Heroic Action

The new Union fleet swung into action this month with a series of shore bombardment missions on the Atlantic coast. Rebel garrisons at Williamsburg, Yorktown and Norfolk were blasted, and the Confederate fleet at Norfolk, consisting of one frigate and one transport, was sunk at anchor.

The navy regrets the loss of the warship USS Techumseh.

Hero of the hour, Commodore David Farratech described the Rebel defense as brave but ineffective. "They attempted to attach mines to our ships using competetive swimmers. But I said 'Damn the speedos. Full speed ahead!'"

President Techlincoln praised the navy and promoted Farratech to Admiral. "Good job," he said. The President also announced the construction of a new warship, the USS Techumseh II.

Confederate naval officers were unavailable for comment.

Confederate naval officers commented "We gave them thar Yankees a good lickin'. The pride of the Union fleet, USS Techumseh, sits at the bottom of sea"

Union cavalry defeated north of Memphis.

Southern militia in cities on the Atlantic coast are trembling in their boots at the thought of their imminent destruction by a poxy Union frigate now that the huge confederate navy of a single frigate and a transport has been sunk. I hate scenarios where ships can destroy land units at will!

            Details of the Battle

Five Union steam warships, accompanied by two steam frigates engaged the garrisons of Williamsburg, Yorktown and Norfolk. In the course of the action, steam frigate CSS Gareth Birch put up a vigourous fight, but was finaly sunk before it could leave Norfolk harbour. The transport CSS Dave was sunk at its moorings.

The Union flagship USS Techumseh was sunk off Yorktown by a lucky speedo attack. The ships USS Curt Sibling, USS McMonkey and USS Agricola suffered moderate to heavy damage and are returning to base for repairs.

I tried to design this so the Union navy could control the coastal areas, without blasting everything in sight. 5 warships took out 9 militia units and and 2 ships. 3 union ships suffered significant damage and one was lost. One was undamaged. Approximate loss in shields is 30 for the Union and 41 for the Confederates. Attacking entrenched regular infantry stacked with artillery would produce more damage to the attacker.

The goal for warships is to be able to destroy an average of 2 full strength ground units while suffering significant damage but not being sunk. For frigates it's having a better than 50% chance of destroying 1 ground unit. Taking out forts should require 4-6 warships.

I don't know if this will produce results within the historical range, but that's part of the playtest.

btw, your save file says Sept'61. I assume I should just rename it to Oct'61?

              ON TO RICHMOND!

              Alexandria falls to Union Troops

The Port of Alexandria has fallen to Victorious Union forces, assisted by our Glorious Navy. Supported by the steam warship USS Harry Tuttle, army and militia units led by General R. U (not to be confused with General F. U) captured the town October 19, 1861. The Harry Tuttle suffered heavy damage in the action, and is expected to be towed back to the naval yard.

Ah that's better, my heads cleared a bit now. Oh Sh1t, more frigate-induced havoc on my coastal cities!

                    Nothing to report.

More shore bombardment of Williamsburg, damage to USS Catfish.

Gareth, when you redo my warship graphic, would you also be willing to make a plain stern wheeler riverboat as well as a blockade runner, similar to this? It would be most appreciated. Thanks.

There is a good looking Blockade runner in Barthi's scenario. Perhaps not to ToT standards though.

                            CONSCRIPTION!

The US Congress has approved President Techlincoln's 'Conscription Act'. "Every able bodied male between 18 and 30 has a duty to defend the Union", said Senator Wheezy MacDuff of Vermont. "Unless of course they can pay $300, like my son," he said.

Administration officials are expecting widespread unrest, due to the Union Morale wonder being made obsolete. "We are increasing the supply of luxuries as a temporary measure, but we've begun researching Martial Law as a potential longer term solution." said a faceless bureaucrat. It is expected that the size of the Union army will increase substantially, due to the lower cost of infantry units.

                            Reb Naval Base Captured!

The Confederate naval base of Norfolk has been captured by a Union amphibious force. Gen. McCellan praised his troops as well as the escorting naval forces. "Good job", he said. The port has been heavily damaged from months of shelling by the Union navy.

                            Cumberland Threatened!

Rebel forces are moving across the Allegheny mountains to attack the important rail centre of Cumberland. Reinforcements are on the way, but poor communications mean delays. A major battle may be in the works, said a faceless General Staff officer.

I downloaded it a few times and it works fine for me. When loaded, it's the end of the Union Dec 1861 turn. It says "Abraham Lincoln, it's your turn". Hit enter and a box says "Union Unrest makes the Union Morale wonder obsolete", and then it says "Jefferson Davis it's your turn' - Jan. 1862
