  • Imperialism 1870, Riverwar and BmB ToT GFX

Hello all! I've been away for a while, but picked up the civ bug again recently, which has spurred me on to finish some graphics tart-ups for three classic scenarios previously converted to ToT. All three are set in the late 19th Century, and necessarily share a lot of units.

The first of these is Phenix Benton's (Exile) multiplayer favourite Imperialism 1870. Catfish has meticulously converted V3 to ToT, and links to this and other Catfish conversions can be found on his site http://users.tpg.com.au/jpwbeest/index.htm (in links section - scenarios are hosted at CFC). Curt was the driving force behind this gfx update, and he has contributed the wonderful cities, terrain (along with a selection of Catfish stuff), improvements and icons. People and units are mine.

Ciaran has created some static sprites to remove health bars from a couple of units as Vista 64 won't let me use SpriteGen (help!). There are two versions, one for use with cntrl-z zoomed-in viewing and the other for Shift-z normal view. I've included a bat file to switch between the two; let me know if this doesn't work as good ole Microsoft Vista 64 no longer supports choice.com, and choice.exe doesnt work for me either (help #2!), so I can't use the bat myself.

Second up is Brown Man's Burden, one of my favourites from the masterful Carl Fritz (Gothmog). It's a fantastic recreation of the colonial scramble for Africa in the late 19th Century, and like Carl's other scenarios is a must-play. It was converted a few years back and is hosted on Tech's site:

Units and people are mine, and I've retained most of the terrain choices of Sarsstock (mostly Catfish stuff) together with his excellent cities.

Last in this three-fer is simply one of the finest civ scenarios created - Riverwar, the handiwork of Allard Höfelt (Allard HS). Brimming with innovation (check out the seasonal cataracts and restriced unit movement freed-up by buiding railways), Allard himself converted this MGE scenario to ToT and added more to it in a ToT beta. There was a fascinating exchange of ideas between Allard and Boco at the time of the beta test, with both designers incorporating each others innovations in their own scenarios. I have V3 of the beta, but can no longer find the link to it in the SL forum; if anyone wants the original scenario files, let me know and I'll e-mail them. AFAIK, Allard never posted a final version, but the beta is pretty complete and polished.

Here are just new gfx files. I've retained more or less Allard's terrain and cities, and replaced my sub-standard units with new versions. Ciaran has kindly made up no-health-bar sprites for the cataracts. Once again, let me know if the bat file to swap sprites doesn't work.

EDIT: Found the playtest thread; it's an interesting read with a contributions from Boco and Agri. I'd forgotten Allard said he had other ToT scenarios up his sleeve, including a Boer War tactical scen. I'd give my left arm to see that!:

EDIT 2: here's the link to the last version of the beta posted (I think!):

                Great units Fairline.

You´ve included some ships which I´m looking for my Civilwar scenario, I would be very happy if I can use them.

Gapetit, McM, C2u: thanks for the comments. Feel free to use anything for your scenario, Sebastian. In fact, I recall I said I'd do some ACW ships for you, and I seem to be in the mood to do 'em at the moment. Can you remind me for the third or fourth time what they were?

Fairline, these units are great. Am I allowed to use some of them for the civilopedia of a Civ 3 mod, too?
