The Bloody Monk HOF Celebration Succession Game!!!
AD 1060 Gift steel to the Indians; rush a couple of freights; give gunpowder to the Greeks for peace. Silk(d):Leon-Washington 300. Coal(d):Monky-Washington 164. Coal(u):Tuna-Washington 104. Gold(u):Strabo-Washington 198. Spice(d): Monky-New York 468. (That seems to be enough for our next advance, so no more deliveries this turn.) Rush a few freights.
AD 1080 Refining->Combustion. Silk(d):Monksville-Boston 588. Coal(d):Burgoss-Boston 345. (That seems to be enough deliveris for this turn.)
AD 1220 Machine Tools->Nuclear Power. Wine(u): Monky-New York 152 Wool(u): Monky-New York 152. Silk(u): Andela-New York 86. Silver(u):Monksville-New York 148
AD 1240 Nuclear Power->Miniturisation. Gems(u):Valladolid-Boston 182. Gems(u):Madrid-Boston 216. Beads(u):Leon-Boston 138. Oil(u)Leon-Boston 138. I gift a lot of techs to the Indians (key civ) which I should have been doing. The Vikings move 2 crusaders near Santander. I bribe 1 and then gift them many techs to try to keep them sweet.
There is still much to do on this turn, but I'll leave that for the next player.

I have retired from Civ2 - haven't played a game in a year, probably.

I'm afraid you have not read the fine print, Six Thousand Year Old Man. You are allowed to take extended breaks, but you can never retire from Civ2.
Anyway, I hope that I did not preempt you or anyone else, but I had a bit of time today and could not refrain from playing once more. Here we go:
1240 - Verrucosus is once more sworn in as Prime Minister by Philip II, now President of Spain. Given the defense minister's report that there are no more sinkable triremes in the Spanish navy, the PM's commission even includes control of naval operations. The major "Whither Spain?" decision to be taken right away is whether to start developing a factory base or to continue with an undiluted trade focus. I pick the latter option because it seems organic at this point. As a result, all cities will keep producing freights to build our cash reserves. The only major building project is going to be the SETI Program to help us race towards the space techs.
1280 - Computers discovered, researching Laser (delaying Flight for as long as possible).
1300 - Laser discovered, researching Flight. Indians are working on UN, Greeks on Women's Suffrage, Americans on Eiffel Tower. Gifting Miniaturization to the Indians, Steam Engine to the Greeks. Indians switch from UN to Women's Suffrage. Vikings an Japanese sign secret alliance against us. (How come we still know this after Marco Polo's Embassy has shut down?)
1320 - Flight discovered, Colossus obsolete, Valencia science output drops back to 1136 beakers. Now researching Mobile Warfare. (No space-advance-prerequisites were available, but I should probably have picked a different tech that makes a safer gift to foreigners.) Peace treaty with America, gifting them Mass Production and Miniaturization.
1340 - Mobile Warfare discovered, researching Radio.
1380 - Advanced Flight discovered, researching Rockertry. Civil Disorder in Valladolid, creating Entertainer. Starting Hoover Dam in Salamanca and gathering freights nearby as a pre-build for Apollo. Greeks start Eiffel Tower. Indians, almost done with Women's Suffrage, switch back to UN.
1400 - Rocketry discovered, researching Genetic Engineering. Gifting Advanced Flight to the Indians. Indians complete UN, work again on Women's Suffrage. Unrest near Avila.
1420 - Genetic Engineering discovered, researching Space Flight. Diplomat moves into position to intercept Avila rebels. Buying up to 40 shields in several cities to help them finish freights for Apollo and final trade deliveries. Americans almost done with Eiffel Tower.
1440 - Space Flight discovered, researching Plastics. Salamanca production switched to Apollo, adding low-value freights for 220 shields total.
Major decisions left for 1440:
- I have not yet moved to deal with the rebels near Avila, but the diplomat can bribe one of them.
- There are two freights in Leon waiting to be shipped off to America. The shipment from Valencia should definitely be sent off, but there's a case for sending the Madrid freight back to Salamanca to help with Apollo. There are two low-value freights already in America, but the beaker row is almost full, so I would delay their delivery until next turn.
- I have not touched the trade rates, but I would consider setting them to 100 % taxes now. Lots of freights will finish during the next few turns. We can send the low-value ones to Salamanca to finish Apollo, but the better ones (particularly anything from Valencia) should be enough to buy us the final techs - we still need Plastics, Superconductor and Fusion.
Everyone, please feel free to comment. Criticism here has been less robust in the absence of active participation from our celebrated host. I am reassured by his occasionally burning lightbulb that he is at least able to watch.
Now, let's turn our gaze towards the stars! Who will be next?
Sorry for my prolonged absence. My health issues overwhelmed me for a time but I am "stable" again. It is nice to see that the game has been progressing. Only three more advances (including an off-path one) and we'll have fusion. This game is almost finished!! Once we launch, the blood-lusters can come out and play.
I am in no shape for a detailed look at each turnset, but there are a few things on my mind--from looking at the last save.
1) [hyperbole mode]Are you guys nuts!![/h mode] Just kidding but really, all that farmland around the SSC is cute and all, but shouldn't someone have rushed a supermarket?? , oh well Can anyone say, 'titsonbull'?? [ I hope everyone, not just the players, gets a good laugh from this; not at anyone's expense, but, just because it is a very funny situation.]
2) Size Matters
This is not so much for this game but for those few who may be studying our effort for future games of Civ2. Earlier I outlined a plan to max the size of the SSC by converting the specials to irrigated grain, then back to silk after growth has finished. Doing that, the SSC could have been size 29 by at least 700ad. That is a lot of lost science over time from the extra geniuses. Something to think about....
3) Multiple Advances
If there were any turns with multiple advances, I missed them. Perhaps, it doesn't matter so much in the current game. WeLove growth was stopped before most cities reached 7 or 8 in size so the impact of Libraries and SuperHighways is not so large this time; and reaching Fusion sooner might be harder than normal to capitalize, not speeding up the launch very much. My head hurts too much to say with any certainty. I just miss having turns with multiple advances.
4) Andela could have been sited across the bay and not killed Bilbao's shields.
5) Was Adam Smith worth the vans??
6) Again, for future reference purposes. The reason one waits to found the SSC is so the other cities founded before it will have their beaker contribution counted (rather than be lost) toward the next advance. You then start with a pretty full (rather than empty) box. That means that stopping deliveries when you have "just enough" is unnecessary. It also makes sense to build some WOW in one of the newest cities. For example, Darwin's, SETI, and Cure. That way, every subsequent city takes advantage of the new Wonder. Again, something to think about....
7) There are few trade routes from our cities to the SSC. The one time bonus is small, but the ongoing value of the route is much greater than other routes.
I hope everyone has enjoyed this game as much as me. Now, on to the finish!!
