The Bloody Monk HOF Celebration Succession Game!!!
Dec 2007: reinstalls Civ II on computer, revert back in time to AD660, Spain….
AD660 check out the vitals…pulse, breathing (seems we are still alive), decide to meet the heathen potentates, discern what is happening in the wider world. Meet with Celts, demand 50g, I decline and then wonder why they don’t want to swap technology. Try the same with the Japanese, they declare war and I can’t even find Japan on the map…(there they are, down there..) Viking reaffirm peace treaty, don’t want nothing from us…Reaffirm peace with the Americans, give them democracy, we get their map of the world….stop by in India for a cup of tea, quite friendly with the Indians after giving the hostile Greeks a wide berth.
Anyhows, after a through and detailed analysis, I decide to dedicate this turn set to wonder building….. Adjust tax to 10%, keep luxuries at 30, move science to 60…hit enter and pray….
AD 680: Japanese change to republic, monkytown builds market place celebrates we love the Monk day, change to building camels. Barcelona builds harbour, change to building marketplace. S(pike) man built in Burgos, start building harbour. Leon builds a pike man, start building vans. Spice caravan arrive in Delhi, rewarded with revenue of 870 gold.
AD 700: We discover gunpowder, all things gunpowder connected upgraded, start studying metallurgy. We love the leader day cancelled in big V. Seville builds van, Seville will keep building vans. Greeks acquire invention from Japanese. Vikings start Adam smith…
AD720 Japanese acquire bridge building from Celts, Celts get invention from Japanese, they sign a peace treaty and we discover metallurgy. We are now researching railroad for Darwin’s….Greeks sneak attack us, killing a diplomat. Big V, the SSC, builds a bank, now constructing a stock exchange. Contact Japanese, and unilaterally declare peace, thus confusing most of the known world.
AD780: Greeks get bridge building from Japanese. Monky Town, Monks ville and Bulls bluff builds van, keeps building vans…Greeks acquire Chivalry. Viking government overthrown. Bilbao builds van, joining the great Spanish caravanning holiday… We discover the railroad and start researching engineers
AD800 Indians develop invention, Viking government changed to monarchy
AD840: we build Adam smith, change to Darwin’s…
AD860: we discover explosives, I commit us to discovering conscription…The treasury is full, just right for the next despot to rush build what they pretty much please… hope I didn’t embarrass myself tooooooo much.
It is good to come back after the holidays and see this game moving as swiftly as ever. Short comments:
1) Are we ready to switch to Democracy in the next Oedo turn? Our galleon's won't cause unrest and we will capture a few more trade arrows currently lost to corruption.
2) After becoming a Democracy, what is the next medium-term goal? Usually, I would be researching towards Industrialization and factories, but with our heavy trading focus and all that cash coming out of our ears, maybe the idea here is to keep building caravans and just buy the entire spaceship in the end.
3) To a casual player, Andela and Burgos (founded by Andemagne) seem like a bit of a waste, because they will never really develop, increase (admittedly just slightly) our number-of-cities-unhappiness and we could have used the settlers very well to keep improving our terrain. Are they in any way related to the "station city" concept that I read about (but perhaps did not complete grasp) in solo's guide a few weeks ago?
For the moment, best of luck to Sharkbait for his upcoming turnset!
I was hoping to finish tonight, but one of my sons has come down with the norovirus floating around Hong Kong at present (I know the feeling already). I'm at 940 and have spent the cash already. My focus so far is ships, engineers and vans in roughly that order, but the emphasis will change soon. Democracy has been established. More to come....

I have this thing for canals. they help out navy. Andela could have been little more well placed. I don't know anything about "station city" or solo's guide.
My Words Are Backed With Bad Attitude And VETERAN KNIGHTS!
OK – finally finished off the last couple of turns. Here’s how it happened.
On looking at our starting situation, I am somewhat perturbed to see we only have 7 galleons and 6 engineers! We also had only 3 vans active, but I know some have been delivered. This formed the basis of my strategy for these turns – get some sort of ship chain/s going, both to India and its neighbours, and maybe also to the Americans who should deliver good van payoffs with their distance and city size. I also planned to go to Democracy ASAP, but we had just missed the oedo year and the next year was 940 AD.
I see that the SSC is still producing hides vans which is good and there is some demand about.
We can’t currently get to one tech per 2 turns – the best we can do is 3 turns.
I change the Elvis in the SSC to a scientist, and set TSL to 20/60/20 as we don’t get any rioting at 20% lux and I want the cash.
I also plan to build my little offshore canal city at (53,21).
Strabo’s need a harbor so that the SSC can use the 2 land tiles that Strabo currently needs to feed itself.
On the tech front I am going to aim for Refrigeration so we can get the SSC to its max size, and I also want to get railroads built so freight flows quickly (hence the need for more engineers for both these tasks).
860 (0) – RB bunch of ships and engineers and vans (in that order). Japanese get Democ from the U.S.
880 (1) – Barcelona builds market, SSC gets stock exchange (both RBs). Now have 10 galleons, 9 engineers and 10 vans. RB a van in the SSC from scratch. U.S. starts SoL.
900 (2) – SSC stops celebrating, but it doesn’t matter since they don’t have any spare food. Santander built at (53,21)! Got it at last! An Indian cannon is in the city radius, so I RB a crux. I also visit the Indians and gift them 7 tech including Democ. Get their map. TSL to 60/20/20 as tech will still be done next turn. RB down to 73g in the bank.
920 (3) – Celts come calling, and I gift them RR.
Conscription -> Industrialisation. Seville spice to Bangalore (D) +172g. Revolution. TSL unchanged. Indians start Darwin.
940 (4) – Democracy established. Argh! Osaka demand for gems gone just as the van was about to be delivered, so Malaga van only makes 54g undemanded. Harbor begun in Strabo. Salamanca wine to Hladir (D) +104g. Valldolid gold to Madras (D) +224g. Tuna silver to SSC (D) +147g! Nice for a domestic route, although it was from the other island.
Sadly the SSC hides supply has vanished! TSL 30/50/20. 4 turns/tech and we’re halfway to the next tech.
U.S. becomes a Democracy.
960 (5) – Ships moving to try and get chains in place, a few vans built. TSL 60/20/20 as tech will be done next turn. 2 hides vans waiting to be delivered next turn.
980 (6) – Indu -> Corporation. Galleons upgraded to transports which is nice. 5 techs given to the Indians.TSL to 80/0/20 as I’m going to finish Darwins next turn or so and so I don’t want to waste the effect on filling up the beaker counter.
Celts steal Physics from Santander, but I decline the chance to go to war with them. Japan does democratic.
1000 (7) – We now have 11 engineers, 12 transports and 10 vans. 5 vans and 96g get Darwin ready for next turn. 900g spent Rbing
1020 (8) – Darwin built.
Corporation -> Electricity -> Refrigeration.
SSC hides to Banglore (D) +492g, but sadly the demand goes, so the next delivery only nets +246g.
WYTM2 wool to Edo (D) +232g. TSL 10/70/20 to ensure tech next time. Gift 3 more techs to Indians so they now have all we have.
1040 (9) – Refrig -> Steel. Harbor in Strabo, 2 workers moved to the sea and the SSC start working those 2 tiles. Irrigation into farmland begun around SSC. The rail network is nearing completion.
I meet the Americans, and gift them Conscr, Corporation and Refrig.
Seville coal freight to New York (D) +490g, Avila silk to Carmarthen (D) +360g, Refrig given to India. RB more vans.
1060 (10) – the SSC hides supply has returned!! Steel -> Refining.
So that’s where I leave it. The ship chain to the U.S. is almost in place – I confess I made 1 false move with 1 ship which caused a problem. I have just dropped some freight off in the U.S. so the chain needs to head home, and one ship needs to be slotted into the chain towards the end so it all is working nicely.
I enjoyed this turnset, and pretty much achieved what I wanted to. We have a rail network joining all but 3 of our cities on the homeland, we are starting to produce some farmland for the SSC and the ships are there to enable deliveries to the Americans. I suggest that the next player begins celebrations in the SSC by bumping up luxuries, and gets the engineers sorting out the farmland ASAP. After that is done and the railroads finished they could be added into the smaller cities where needed, and maybe a few cities could do with a mine here and there to get a few more shields, or they could found some more cities.
A couple of points re the ship chains. The one to India etc is starting from Monksville, while the American one is starting from Bilbao. I can't remember off the top of my head whether Leon is yet linked by rail (think it is though), but if it is then the US ship chain could rebase out of there and get a few more squares closer. This may help if we want to deliver to San Francisco rather than the other US island.
