Re: A different way of looking at this?
That's almost a challenge!
The only way I could hope to pull it off would be to split the air/land/sea campaigns into separate maps, and use land terrain for 'sea' on one of them. Still its major-league work, and I'm feeling like being just a little more conventional. For the same reason, I'm leaning away from some of the other longer shots.
Okay, I'm narrowing down the list. Since someone else is interested in "Downfall", I'm leaning toward three choices:

Burma 42-45, as the Allies facing a crushing offensive until they can turn it around.
Chindits, Marauders, Chinese, building the Ledo road (i.e. trade), and river crossings would play a role. Geography would be a big factor. I'm really sorry Agricola, but this is as close to a Red Front as I'm willing to try.

Diadochi. The player starts as Alexander himself, who dies in a somewhat random manner. Then he'll play as Seleucus, who was a long shot at first, but eventually became a biggie. With Indians, Romans, Carthaginians, along with trustworthy
Successors, this would be as close to a classic empire builder as I could get, but with a few odd Bocoisms. It's been a while since I read up on this, so I'd need some help with the history.
Alesia. This'd be a tactical toughie. As the Romans, you'd have the freedom of placing your forts (yeah, I got that from the hex game), which would be cities that build darts and boulders to weaken Gauls on the outerworks. The Gauls, who'd outnumber the Romans to the degree that the ever self-effacing Caesar records, would mount an attack designed to make the Romans scramble desperately.
Eventually, this one would probably involve ALT files.
If you feel strongly about any of these, post away!

No argument.
