I think the basic Papal States flag was halved yellow and white, the same as you posted but without any coat of arms. You can probably find out on the Flags of the World site:

        Boy would that look wrong.

@ Sarsstock: Ohyeah, MGE it is. You should know that too, since Exile has made it pretty clear that he prefers MGE.

Yes, Brian will be so disappointed, but I don't own a copy of ToT.

          Just MGE.

It's the beast that I know.

Sars, when you finish with this little task, I have a much more difficult one in mind.

Does anyone know if Franks, Vandals, Ostro- and Visigoths had flags?

The Franks supposedly used a purple flag with white stars in Charlemagne's time, but I guess you're thinking Migration period? If so, no idea lol

The Goths used a Gothic cross (no sh1t) in the 6th century in Italy. I included pics on my Rome's enemies unit set.

The 'wavy' cross on the Vandal unit in the same set is a known Vandal shield design, so I guess it would suffice as a flag...

Two down, 1 to go on that flag set.

Gareth, WHICH rome's enemies set? Checked my unit files and there are 2 or 3 of yours with that title.

                From Flags of the World:

The first attested Papal flag was red with white cross, dated probably from c. 1195. In 1204 for sure (and perhaps before) it's attested the red flag with white cross containing white keys. The first available image is from 1316. The flag is rectangular with the fly rounded in the corners and swallow tailed in center and has four white keys, one in each quarter. The four keys were the keys called of St Peter. About 100 years later, a similar flag is attested on red cloth without white cross. In next centuries a red flag with keys or religious motives seems to be in use.

Sars, let's just go with the not-so-silly one I found. The colors are fine, and based on Ghost's post, this one should work as well as any other.

Alrighty, sorry for the delay but the cursed old RL's been messing up my free time as of late . Anyways, here are the first of the two flags that I've been able to put together, one for Florence and the other for the Papal State in MGE format. If there are any problems just let me know.

Those are beutiful flags, Chris! You truly know what you're doing!

One thing though, the Florence coat of arms looks kind of like the Japanese sun.

Exile: nice flag, the Hungarian one... with the "Corvinus" ;-) ...perfect for Danubian affairs in 1490s...

Somewhere I found a medieval Papal flag, it was red with two golden keys... (red and gold are Roma's colours nowadays too)
And I saw an Imperial (not Papal) flag, red with a white cross... Not casually the anti-imperial north-italian cities - the "Comuni" of the "Lega Lombarda" - had white flag with red cross...
"Dilexi iustitiam, odivi iniquitatem, propterea morior in exilio" [PAPA GREGORIUS VII +1085] - ("He amado la justicia, he odiado la iniquidad, por eso muero en exilio") - ("I loved justice, I hated unfairness, that's why I die in exile") - (J'ai aimé la justice, j'ai détesté l'iniquité, c'est pourquoi je meurs en exil") - ("Ich liebte Gerechtigkeit und hasste Ungerechtigkeit, deshalb sterbe ich im Exil")

Yes, come to think of it the dark shading effect on the emblem did make it look a little Japanese'ish. Here's a re-touched flag for Florence.

                                Ah, good point

There's a ToT compilation bitmap called 'fairline Rome's enemies2.bmp' - there are Germanic Leaders on row 5 with standards drawn on the units. The first three sport Gothic crosses (the green colour isn't significant btw - it was just the civ colour for the Goths in the ToT version of Justinian the Great), and the last guy has a wavy Vandal cross. It's worth bearing in mind these symbols were used when the Goths and Vandals were Christian Kings in the successor states in the 6th C.; quite what was used when they were Pagan barbarian invaders is anyone's guess.
