  • The Golden Diplomat Awards

I was thinking of establishing an award for the very best scenarios of all time. The awards would be a (virtual) golden statuette, the Golden Diplomat or 'Dippy'. I'll be one of the judges, since it's my idea, but others would be welcome. Any suggestions?

I'd also appreciate any nominations from the community.

Is this a one-time award or will it be given on a - say - annual basis?

If yes, I think that would make sense ...

Monthly or bimonthly, like the old Golden Fleece award?

I nominate Curt Sibling as the first recipient!

Who's going to walk the announcers on stage? I like bi-monthly.

Best scenarios of all time sounds like awards for scenarios rather than people.

I think the Silver Fleece is quite enough already.

Nor does it sound like anything that should happen any more often than once a year. And with the current declining situation of Civ2 I think a one time thing would be the best. It can always be decided later to do it again, but then if it still remains a "best scenario of all time" thing, there wouldn't be too many changes would there?

I kinda fancy the idea of something like the Hodadian Awards. Not something to be done regularly, but kind of an all-time thing.

Then again, the Hodadian Awards were awards voted for by "the people", not judged by a few judges.

Well the Silver Fleece is given out by the Spanish Civers. What is the Scenario League equivalent?

I am with Merc here - maybe twice a year would be a good idea - given the speed some people work here ...

I wasn't really thinking of a set period of time between awards, just picking the best scenarios from the past and present and giving additional awards when a new scenario merits it. I'm guessing there are less than 10 scenarios out there today that would qualify.

The idea is the award goes to the designer for a specific scenario. So it's an individual scenario that wins the award for the person.

Criteria should probably include innovation, craftsmanship and enjoyability. Others?

Over the years there have been a number of lists posted of the best scenarios of all time. I'd be very surprised if any best scen award did not go to one of the top scens on the lists.

Rather than bestowing any kind of "best" honor on a scen developed in the past, wouldn't it make sense to have an award for the best scen of the year, starting with 2005? Let's acknowledge the work of people who are currently developing scens.

Special competitions do not seem to work. I think that, after much initial enthusiasm, the competition based on scens with an Indian subcontinent theme failed because designers did not want to take time from their "hot" projects and spend it on a less meaningful undertaking.

Also, rather than making this a Poly thing, I would also consider bringing in the Civ II communities from the other active Civ II sites. Maybe there should be a second award, for the best first scen by a designer, to encourage more individuals to try their hands at designing .

Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.

I agree with the idea of an award, but it should represent
out appreciation of the best stuff from the CIV2 archives.

As Agricola says, it should cover stuff from different communities too.

It would be nice to make it bi-yearly...The idea of 'best newcomer' is a good one.

And perhaps the candidates could be picked in polls, etc...?

I 100% agree with the choice of Harlan as an all-time great awardee.

                        You are too kind, man!

I would say that most folks around here would agree
that you are for more deserving of the accolades!

Good choice Tech! Is Harlan still active in the CTP forum? (or was it Alpha Centauri?)

He went from Civ2 to CtP1/2 to Civ3 and then disappeared. I haven't seen him in years. His last post on Apolyton was in June 2002.

I'm glad you just did it now, techumseh, rather than risking getting bogged down in details, with every sharing his own ideas of what they want and then nothing happening.

Then again, in the end, it's really just your choice, techumseh, so maybe it would be better if the prize actually shows that. Everyone could just as well make a list of his favourite scenarios/designers/whatever on his own SL wiki page using whichever criteria he wishes.

Fair enough, I'll make it clear that it's really my award. I have a pretty clear idea what I want it to be: to recognize ground breaking scenarios, each of which pushed the envelope of what was possible with Civ2. Democracy is a wonderful thing, but sometimes you have to march to your own drum.

I tried to email Harlan to let him know about the Dippy, but it bounced back. Does anyone know how to reach him?
