  • I'm looking for X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter to play against some friends over the 'net. I've never been able to find it here though :-/

    [edit:]

And indeed, 0-cost terrain only affects land units, so it won't be useful for sea or air units.

    • Nothing beats the old TIE-FIghter (with add-ons) game!

I spent so many hours of my mis-soent youth playing this one...

Might dig it out and see if it can run with DOS-box or anything...!

      (all for research, you understand!)

      • I actually beat TIE-Fighter, with all the addons.

It was indeed a great game, but has no multiplayer.

And no need to use DOSBox here, I've put up a rig exclusively for DOS games (old Pentium 133 I had lying around)

        It doesn't even have windows!

        • Aha! The good old days when X-tree and DR-DOS were the standard!

          PS
I urge the thread starter not to give up on this project.
Even if it means creating a tactical 'fleet battle' scenario,
that would be a great opportunity to utilise the recent
          and awesome units by fairline...!

Imagine using the capital ships as cities and smaller
craft as marine carriers to storm the enemy vessels?

          Could be huge fun!

          • i tried using terrain to make the starships and used cities to for control points and most of the units were troops, transports and fighters, although i had no idea what to do with it,

although making maps for it was fun,
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!
Rules are like Egg's. They're fun when thrown out the window!
Difference is irrelevant when dosage is higher than recommended!

            • I've lost my TIE fighter CD. Well, I think a certain kleptomaniac "friend" stole it actually. Grrr.

Sorry to continue going OT, but nothing beat flying a TIE for the glory of the Empire. X-Wing and the other games didn't have the same feel, flying for the rebels against hordes of weak TIEs just felt lame... But pasting the floppy-haired farm boys from behind the stick of a TIE, and being secretly briefed by that shady guy with the cloak was just plain cool. When will they learn, it's better to be the BAD GUY in games...

I agree, this scenario was looking great, it'd be a shame if nothing came of it...

              • I absolutely agree with everything you guys have said. In fact, those of you familiar with my evil twin alter-ego "Hu Man Bing" will probably remember he actually was a TIE Fighter pilot (at least in the way he was represented on our web site). His email address is even "missilegunboat[at]whatever.thing" and most of his rantings would concern how the flight instructors claim you can't fly a TIE Advanced drunk but he can prove otherwise, etc. Once he was convinced a Sellentori Space Slug had climbed into his urine tank during a spacewalk he took to moon the Moon.

I'm currently playing X Wing vs TIE Fighter, which is seriously awesome. I have also bought the TIE-CD game from eBay and will install it on the Windows95 computer I have lying around. Things will be super sweet for a while.

Maybe we can post mini scenarios here that use the units and sounds. Just little things, like the mini-missions you get in XvT: "3 Frigates vs. Calamari Cruiser" etc. I'll get some sound files together and see if the game plays those okay.

                • Good stuff!

I too have fond memories of playing 'Kort Ziblon' my TIE-pilot character...

I managed to get to 'Emperor's Reach' level in the secret order of Palpatine.

                  Those were good days!

                  PS
Look forward to seeing fairline's work in a new scenario!

                    • I used to love setting up custom missions with the DOS game editor.

Getting capital ships to have the same movement tactics as fighters,
then laughing as they all smashed into each other and exploded!

                      • There's a DOS game editor??? How does it work? Where can I find it?

I currently have a Windows game editor and I'm trying to get familiar with it. I have started a thread about XvT in the Off Topic section if anybody is interested either in scen writing (in XvT) or in general multiplayer. I know I'm ready for some MP action.

Oooh! I'll redouble my effort to get the game then, there will surely be quite some people here willing to play.

I might end up ordering it through the INTERNETS. I hope the damn customs don't charge me an eye :-/

My computer is way too feeble to run Empire at War, and I'm so far out of the loop I had barely even heard of the game. I do recall a game called Force Commander or something which came out in the late 90s and not long after Supremacy. It was like Command and Conquer but you spent Command Points or something instead of resources.

Ah, well. The scenario is currently stillborn but I may try tickling the muse and seeing if she'll get back in the saddle, to butcher a perfectly fine pair of bouncing metaphors.

                            *sigh*
oh I loved Rebellion. I modded the hell outta that thing...so much fun. Played it from 97 > 02...my fave game ever probably...

                            • Alinestran Addiction Update:

TIE Fighter CD has been purchased and a Win98 laptop has been procured. The game runs fine on that with my USB joystick. So I'm probably going to be stuck in the house for a few months...

I went back to the scenario and tickled my Muse's tits (poetry) to see what inspiration resulted, and it wasn't bad. So I'm going to find some time to roll up my sleeves and get back into the game.

Right now, though, TIE Fighter is simply awesome. In fact, I'd say it's even osimosity unfettered. Clear the minefield but watch out for Admiral Harkov!
