• All right, I have to admit you've done a lot on this Leo. Maybe it can work.

I've registered, and I'd like to start work on the contest pages. But there's no information on how to edit. For example, I'd like to get rid of some of those little buttons cluttering up the rules section. How? I want to upload Mercator's map so it can be downloaded as well. Can you link to an editing guide?

Also, on the scenario page, I think it would be preferable if we organized it according to members. John Ellis is a fine scenario designer, but he's not active on SL and never has been AFAIR. Can we set up pages for our active members and allow them to edit them themselves? I'd like to see a page for Curt, OM, Exile, etc.

The same goes for graphics. Instead of sorting by period, could we do it by artist - Fairline, Tanelorn, BE, etc?

My suggestion is that we make this site member focused, which will encourage participation in the site, and will distinguish if from other sites out there.

• Techumseh,

There's an upload file option at the bottomleft. Use it to upload images. Try it and practice on your personal wiki homepage.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

• Brian, is it possible to do it both ways?

I don't mind Creator's sections, that's cool.

But I'd like to see things divided by period too.

• This internet spot is looking awsome. If there is any grunt-work surfing, typing, or anything that I could do to help, I would be pleased to! I do not have really excellent computer skills of any sort...

PS: the previous incarnation was where I did most of my learning about scenario building (except for live questions answered here at the poly forum) the last year. It's a really good service for civers.

• Is it possible with wiki magic to have scenarios listedmultiple ways? for example, could scenarios be displayed in order of # times dowloaded (popularity), date created, version type... with some sort of 'display by...' options?

• Okay, I need to make a tutorial or two, maybe write some guidelines, and then start recruiting volunteers. Feeling a bit under the weather right now.

Also, I think the best section for volunteers to start populating is the Tips one, and it's not ready yet.

Creating New Pages

Do you see the title bit in the URL:
sleague.apolyton.net/index.php?title=Bonaparte

You create a new page by changing it to your desired page title and hitting enter:
sleague.apolyton.net/index.php?title=Bonaparte
sleague.apolyton.net/index.php?title=Red Front

The easiest approach is to copy the contents of a similar page beforehand and edit that. Edit and preview. Edit and preview. Edit and preview and learn.:P

(For questionable reasons, I've been turning everyone into a category. Exile turns into Category:Exile, Mercator turns into Category:Mercator, Jim Panse turns into Category:Jim Panse, and so on. If you place a bit at the end an article, a link to it is automatically created in the Category:Exile article.)

Learning Notes

A lot of the pages start off with a short table, and that's probably the hardest bit of learning a Wiki.

By Period

The pretty scenario and review listings are copy-and-paste rather than automated. It's not as scary as it sounds. We should worry about By Period listings and stuff like that later, when there are more people comfortable with the what's being done. They aren't hard to add, but there are probably cleverer approaches that aren't yet obvious.

Ideas:
- lists of Favourite Scenarios by members of the community
- etc.

• I'm a little leery of uploading numbnails right now, I don't have Nemo's permission to use one his unit graphics as an icon, but I'm going to use one anyways because the Raging Dragon thumbnail just doesn't fit for the scenario

EDIT: much better now, but would someone please rewrite my description?

• Excellent work, H Tower. You are getting the hang of it.

Some edits:
- Changed Red Front v1.4 to Red Front v1.4 because we don't want a separate page for each version.

- Split up into and

- (Same for Captain Nemo and Alex Mor into Captain Nemo and Alex Mor)

- Created a page for Captain Nemo and Alex by copying the Red Front summary table to it and categorizing them as Designers

- Copied the Red Front row to the Historical Civ2 Scenarios table

- Copied the Red Front review summary to arthVeda">DarthVeda's page and made him a reviewer

- Copied the Red Front review summary to the Reviews page

(Also, I've just discovered wiki Templates. It's a way to insert canned text into a page. Good for navigation controls and blurbs (e.g. a Template:Leo's Favourite Scenarios link collection, inserted on relevant pages with a Leo's Favourite Scenarios thingie. Haven't used it yet.

Categories are meant to include everything, and templates are just for easy navigation between highlights.

I am at work right now.)

• This is how I originally had it, but then I remembered Colwyn's v1.5, which since it is by a different author probably deserves a seperate page?
...
Also, that description of Red Front is pretty poor, mostly a filler while I did the rest of the page, but now it's plastered on half a dozen pages, is there no way to make it where we only have to change it once and not several times? Keep the continuity without the extra work?
...
I think for a while I'm going to concentrate on making people pages instead of scenarios, so I can avoid doing both at the same time...

• Question: How are we representing the dates? The scenarios in the wiki now only have a start date, I've been pointing at some scenarios with start and end date. do we want only the start date, or both?

check out: http://sleague.apolyton.net/index.ph...y:Captain_Nemo for what I mean.

and yes, that was me that put in 194X, I'm too lazy to go see when the scenario starts.

We could have them share the page, or we could create a Red Front (Colwyn) and link to it from Red Front.

Also, that description of Red Front is pretty poor, mostly a filler while I did the rest of the page, but now it's plastered on half a dozen pages, is there no way to make it where we only have to change it once and not several times? Not without making the learning curve steeper.

I am experimenting with templates right now, and they could be used for that, but a new user would have problems figuring out what was going on. Remembering to create that second page is a counter-intuitive kink.

It would probably be best to just swallow the copy-and-paste unless we want to have a lot more duplicate views. Right now, we have All Scenarios, Historical Scenarios, Fictional Scenarios, and By Author. I think By Century is unnecessary -- it's more of a convenient split than a natural way of thinking about things. We'd be better off with theme-oriented categories/templates -- Roman Empire Scenarios, WW2 Scenarios, etc -- and those should not be just a table.

You can go to Red Front and click on What Links Here if you are losing track. Personally, I rely on the Categories at the bottom. If it's a category, it probably has a relevant table.

I think for a while I'm going to concentrate on making people pages instead of scenarios, so I can avoid doing both at the same time...

Do what you think is best.

Go for just the start date.

Just ballpark the decade then. 1940 is good enough.
