    • Thanks for pointing those out Exile. I get confused with regards to US Navy planes. 'Ju-88' was a typo.

      @ Patine

Here is the Japanese cavalryman. I'm not quite sure on the uniforms of the era, so it's probably not accurate.

      • Just a few suggestions:

        The Japanese:

        1) I would definitely keep in the Val - it was the Japanese carrier workhorse.

        2) I would also keep in the white Japanese Zero. It looks better than all those green planes. After all, the Jap player will be going after islands using mostly carriers. And it looks good

        The Americans:

I would suggest the Americans have THREE types of heavy bombers, each with different ranges and cost:

        Ranges (in miles):

        B-17 = 1,800

B-24 = 2,400-2,800 (replaced the B-17 in the Pacific due to its longer range)

        B-29 = 4,100

        • Thanks for the suggestions (and the cavalry, typhoon)! I think I'll put the cavalry in place of the Bansai Troops and keep the Shinhoto (I already have a dedicated offensive infantry unit). As well, I'll keep the Val; you've convinced me, but I'll can the redundant merchant ship for a mine, and thus have one generic landing craft, as currently presented (I was planning to have separate US and Japanese landers and cannibalize the merchant freighter for that). I'll probably also take Leonidas' advice and use a white Zero (probably the one by jimmy). The extra Chinese infantry and the Dutch Marines may also be chopped, for such things as Japanese paratroopers and something else (any suggestions?). I'll also keep both the P-51 and the B-24, getting rid of the redundant British infantry, as before. So, what I need now is a Japanese paratrooper, a sea mine, and a good B-24. If anyone can help me, I'd be much obliged. Thanks!

            • I've got the Japanese paratrooper on the WW2 units thread, and most of my others are from that set as well, I think. I do still need a B-24 and sea mine, and it seems apparent jimmy's only extant Zero (unless I'm mistaken and have missed one) is green, so I'm also looking for a white Zero (maybe just a tweak of jimmy's). I'm still open to suggestions as to what would be the best thing to replace that redundant Chinese infantry with.

Your original units.gif (on page 10 of this thread) had some white/grey Zeros:

be sure to check out the massive japanese naval compolation i posted in the ww2 thread, it has ALL of japans carriers of ww2, plus a few that could have been,

                          • Thanks, Erika! Actually, I did see (and download) your ships collection on the WW2 thread. It's great!

BTW, I'd still like to use jimmy's base Zero, but I'd like it to be white. If someone could please tweak its color (assuming jimmy doesn't mind), I'd be most appreciative.

                              • As I understand it, this scen will only be playable as Japan. Also, there is still some fluidity in the selection of units. What is important to a player is that Japan can build all the units that historically it had in '44 and '45.

An obsolescent cavalry unit or another run-of-the-mill infantry unit are irrelevant in the final defence of the home islands in '45, whereas a coastal force of mines, suicidal motor boats and manned torpedoes might do some good. Don't forget that Kamikazes sank or damaged over 400 US ships during the invasion of Okinawa, the first time that the Japanese got really serious about suicide tactics.

The problem with balancing the scen is not in making the Allies strong enough. Events can generate any size Allied force, including A-bombs, wherever and whenever needed. This an easy way to make the scen play and come out whatever way Patine considers best.

The problem is in providing players with a reason for playing if the outcome is certain defeat. If good play cannot force a stalemate and a negotiated peace (Allied war weariness, casualties etc), IMHO the scen is a dead duck as far as anyone actually playing it.

Don't shortchange the Japanese on useful units that they actually had available in favor of another Allied unit or a next to useless Japanese one.

Excerpts from the Manual of the Civilization Fanatic :

Money can buy happiness, just raise the luxury rate to 50%.
Money is not the root of all evil, it is the root of great empires.
