I will only build a baracks early if I find myself way too close to a known aggressive player in MP and he has already found me. Except for that, I have other things to build. If you build baracks early, you will fall way to far behind other experienced players. The only way to catch back up is taking their cities. Not as easy as taking AI cities, so it's never a sure bet, and if you fail, you will have probably fallen so far behind that your death will be iminent.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit.
