    • I took the criticism a bit personal at first, but you managed to convince me that it wasn't meant as badly as I perceived it. And considering that you all seem to be 56-year-old baby-booming conservatives, I guess I can find it in my heart to forgive you for your stubborn ways

As for the LH, it would certainly be a gamble to go without it. Still, I'd say it's not unreasonable to assume that an island would be within two turns of sailing. It's not easy to test the viability of that approach now, unfortunately. As for Monarchy, my point was that it'd be important once you started expanding, and negligible until then.

        56?? If only!

I suspect that everyone else felt that I would have been cruel and started us on an island 15 squares from anything else.

LH does have its uses. Our vet triremes should be decent in defense against barbs, snooping AIs, etc. Ditto for vet Caravels and vet Ironclads, eventually. And there's the extra movement, which certainly will be some help on a map this size.

/me muses... getting LH pretty much kills any idea of an early representative government. In Republic, I always race to Magnetism to solve unhappiness issues caused by Caravels... we won't be doing that now.

The AI headstart scenario was challenging and forced me to do things much differently than I usually do (building catapults and pikemen, for example). As far as I know, only your late compatriot was able to play this one successfully to the end.

          • You are free to change the insult (compliment?) to 6k-year-old conservatives if you like

It's certainly useful, my argument was that going without it would be a gamble that might pay off. But the main argument in favour of it was the fact that the map wasn't random, I would probably have suspected you of devious cruelty as well and played it safe. I think primarily in ICS patterns, which is why I might have opted for taking the gamble anyway, seeing as expansion is the only way to increase overall production considerably.

I don't think the young-uns think these things through: yes, we were once young too, but with age and experience we have moved to more conservative views. We have seen the failures and limitations of the radical and liberal perspectives. The young think their perspective is something new that just needs the older ones to get out of the way; the older ones have tried that in their youth and moved on to what is more timeless.

Sort of the way Civ3 players move back to Civ2...

                  Sore Loser

I think you chose a very apt handle for yourself. You seem to be more interested in name calling than in understanding the basis of the critiques. Do you really think age or point of view causes a deficiency that keeps some folk from agreeing with you?? Deal with the issues addressed and you'll do fine here...and you might just learn something. (Explaining your position in a better way teaches the teacher, too.)

And if you stick to the issues you will undoubtedly get more players for your experiment. Good luck.

I'm trying. Silly certainly looks to be a challenge; Lazy may be even more so. Hmmm I have an idea, let's do an OCC (for a while) Bloodlust !

Do you guys really want me to fire up some more?

Yeah, I'm an over-the-hill boomer too. But I'm only financially conservative (since age 7). On the other spectra, I vary twixt libertarian & liberal.

I do enjoy some simplicities in my life -- haven't salted my food in over 30 years, gave up the cream & sugar for coffee two decades ago and two years ago gave up coffee altogether. Fancy & fashion just wash right by me.

But as far as games go, I'm a little slow to get going. I have about 30 computer games purchased, lying unopened on the shelf (including SMAC). Two months ago, I finally cracked open CIV III (picked up at the half price sale -- along with another copy of Civ II) and started a couple of games -- and have yet to finish or get back to either one.

Oh Sore, some time back I posted that Microcenter was selling a multipack of three games for $6.00 US -- one of which was Civ II MGE (so I bought a couple.) No excuse not to have this version in your game collection.

                      • Observation

This island chain looks vaguely like Hawaii.

This isn't a world map but IIRC the Hawaiian Is. are the most isolated from any land mass.

Anyway, the outbound boat can uncover eastward, especially if it does an occassional north/south tack; while the other boat continues to the north to find the last island in the chain and then comes back to Troy on the east side. I think it was fortunate that there was more than one island. Too bad they are all so small, but even so, finding a few more close by would be swell.

                        • There was a SXN game challenge played at CFC some years back, where the two teams (Classic & MGE) both started on Hawaii on the Pacific map that comes with Civ 2.

Maybe I'll go back and have a closer look at that map to see if you're right Monk.

                          • Bloody Monk: you need to convert your reader/typist to Civ2 religion. Or is it enough of a challenge to get help cruising the forum?

Duke: you said you playing time is Sunday? I can definitely be done by then. I may be able to jump on it tonight (Thur), but in any case the logging will probly take more time than the playing.

                            • Well I can only collect the save at work I'm afraid so I'm hoping that you'll be able to have it done by 4 or so tomorrow (GMT). Don't worry if RL intervenes, as I'll be able to wait another week.

30?? Well, I'd be just as bad except I'm far too cheap to buy a game I'm not 90% sure I'll play. That's why I didn't buy Civ3 after comments on 'Poly and a brief try-out (mostly looking over a friend's shoulder).

Don't get me started. I haven't the heart for it.

Shame you haven't tried SMAC, it really does have some good points. Not recommended without either a graphics accelerator or a 750 MHz+ processor. I'm curious what the other 29 games are…
