After capturing Manilla, and refusing to sign an end to the hostlities, the Independent AI offers me money. Is it OK to extort money from the Independents this way?

Japanese Army victorious!

This month the Japanese flag was raised on the governours mansion in Manilla. After a month long seige, and a week long artillery bombardment the Philipine city was finally liberated of its European opressors. Many battles were fought in the interiour of the archipelago as well with the many Spanish troops in their fortresses, but the powerfull Japanese cannons managed to eradicate the islands from the foreigners. Battles were long and hard however, and the victory has caused great losses among the Japanese forces. In total, the losses amount up to the equivalent of three cannon-regiments, and reserves of the Japanese army have been depleted.
The Spanish put up a stiff resistance, and had it not been for the powerfull cannons of the Imperial Japanese Navy, the archipelago would probably still see many Spanish controlled islands.

During long and hard negotiations, peace was signed with the Spanish. The Spanish will never set foot in eastern Asia again, and 600 Gold was paid in reparations for their harsh occupation of the Philipine people. These funds were invested immediately in infrastructure.

Anarchy in U.K... errr... in France
Food supplies are growing sparse in some French cities, and international trade remains frozen. Unarmed ships sit off Japanese, American, and British ports, waiting to drop off their goods. We ran into the Royal Navy in port near Japan, apparently also dropping off trade with our eastern friends.

We congradulate the Japanese on their seizure of Manilla.

French navy destroys rebel cannons in Indochina.

Casablanca Falls !!!
Despite the troubles at home, the French army and navy has done a superb job defending Algeria. The city of Casablanca fell to heavy bombardment from naval and cannon forces. Surprisingly, no ships and cannons were lost in the engagement, a relief to our cannoneers from Paris who were already preocupied with the problems at home.
