OK have sent the file to Beta using Warlords V2.13. It seems I might have needed to remve the password in Warlords 2.08 before installing the Civ4 1.74 patch.

Sent it on to Witt.
Thanks Strudo! Whatever you did seems to work, but my understanding is that Wittlich's workaround, as described above, is the only way to get a save patched.
If you have found another way, please share.

No, no other way. I just used the last file that I got and did the procedure. The problem I had before was the other of things I think. I did a complete uninstall then installed civ4, patched to 1.63, removed password, patched to 1.74, reapplied password and sent that file to who it had to go to. Then I installed Warlords, patched to 2.08, but then this game wouldn't load so I could remove the password.
This time I installed both civ and warlords with 1.63 ad 2.08 patches, removed passwords from both games I need to, patched both to 1.74 and 2.14 and reapplied password. Still waiting to find out if the vanilla one had worked or not. But it should be fineComment
