Any problem you have with BTS that prevents PTBS will prevent PBEM from going as well. Most likely you will be able to play both, but whatever is causing the issue will create a conflict later in the game; you need to resolve this before starting any long-term multiplayer game.
If you want, I and probably others would be happy to test some direct IP games to see if it will work and see what's wrong, this weekend or whatever.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.
