Heu... No sorry, I don't get it... Is it because of the alliances? I've never played with teams. Do we collaborate in teams? And in this case, who gets the advantage of being the first to discover a tech (I think of course particularly of religions)?

Yes. In a team game you both share a lot of things (including techs). When you discover a religion [or other tech that has a payoff] the team which receives it is semirandom; I say semi because if you discover two religions, whichever team receives the first religion, the other team will get the other inevitably.

Wonders you also both share the advantages of in most cases IIRC, and team projects you work on together (like space ships I believe, though I've never got that far into a team game).

OK, thanks Snoopy and Pinchak. Now I understand. You only need some patience with me

So, team work goes far beyond what I thought. Looks really good!

Check out snoopy's guide. The link is in his sig.

I hace PM'd dacole to get the game set up. It will be his choice whether he uses Gamespy or Direct IP, although I am sure snoop has an opinion on this.

And Ephack, yes, being teams in civ4 means being truly joined at the hip, unlike civ3 where it was an out-of-game agreement to share stuff in game. In civ4 it happens automatically - no need to 'trade' techs. It took me a bit to learn the ropes with this as well, in a team game running over at MZO.

                    • By absence of my teammate which means no discussion about the issue at hand is possible, I deem myself forced to choose Julius Caesar.

Btw, I don't have a GameSpy login and I won't create one either (bad experiences with GameSpy). If there's no committed server hosting the game, I have to give my spot to the next in line (Aro I believe).

                      • i think somebody offered to host it. i also wouldn't want to use gamespy, for the same reason.

beta, thanks for the info, but i meant connection for THIS game, not just generally

                        • We only know when the game is setup. It should either be server based (the easiest in my opinion) or with a permanent IP address.
Both are connected to through the Multiplayer-->Direct IP-connection screen ingame. What I don't know if is we have to give a password beforehand to the one setting the game up, or give one in when we have the turn for the first time.

                          • The host sets the game password - which if it is direct IP we may be able to skip. You set your civ's password on the first turn.

I am currently involved in 5 pitboss games. 3 run on gamespy - including one that I am hosting. 2 run via direct IP/server based, including the one that snoop is hosting.

Having played with both, I think I would vote for the direct IP method.

oops. Sorry. Yes, dacole offered to host. Sent him a pm.

I felt the same way for a long time. The only reason I broke down recently was because that was how Faraxis was hosting multiplayer. Gamespy is truely a peice of garbage.

So why do i host my Pittboss game with gamespy as opposed to direct ip?

To use direct ip you need a static ip address. Personally, I like to be a moving target when it comes to hackers.
