I'll try uninstalling again ... I also had a nonpatched version intentionally kept around, so that might be the problem, didn't think of that. I can probably fix that fairly easily. (I have a friend who can't install the patch because it can't find his Warlords installation. Odd, that...)

Eureka!
Connected two times in a row on the first attempts, after I dropped the forwarding of UDP 2056 to my IP address. Not sure what else may have been happening. One change in the interim is that I dropped the windows firewall, although it had the proper exceptions listed.
To answer your question Alex - regarding other MP games - I dunno - this was my first try. That was why I wanted snoopy or someone else to set up a simple two person game, and I could test my connection on that.
Fingers crossed that whatever combination I now have works poperly.
And thank goodness for the game simply playing the city turns - although I am a bit behind on exploration now.Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.

Connected just fine on the first try snoopy. And I am connecting regularly to Alex's game now as well.
(Maybe I should apply for that network engineering degree now.... )Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.

Just for the sake of my curiosity... what is your IP address now? Does it still have .12 (or whatever it was when you set it up) in the end? Because if it worked with the forward once, it must always work (speaking the routing/forwarding part) - unless, of course, you IP has changed in the meantime...Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Forwarding doesn't always work properly for some routers... forwarding always made my router (Linksys) work worse than not forwarding (and just DMZing). In fact, with both forward+DMZ it was always less likely to connect than just DMZ.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Well, it largely depends on what you have on your computer... this computer has nothing of value (no bank records etc.) and so even if it were entirely erased I'd be at most irritated, but not financially hurt That, and I'm very careful about what and where I go.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Well, as I posted above - I did not even finish reinstalling the OS and Windows were hacked again (and mind you, I did not even go anywhere - I was just installing Windows). It was scary. I had to disconnect the PC from the net, install Windows, put a firewall in (it was pre-SP2), lock the PC up and only then reconnect the wire...
Since then, I am very reluctant to tell people to make their PCs accessible from outside without limiting the access somehow... I know it's now better with Windows Firewall and all, but it's still a pretty risky business.
