‘Welcome Frederick. It is good to see you.’ said Otto as soon as Frederick had taken his seat.

‘Thank you, My Lord. May I inquire as to your health.’

‘Actually, that was the first thing I wanted to discuss today. My health is not good, and the doctors are not sure how much longer I have in this world. But we will not dwell on that, as we have much to attend to today.’

Otto continued ‘First, Frederick. I am signing the Holy Succession Papers today, with a special clause. As of today we will share responsibilities for the running of the government. For public and religious purposes, I remain as Emperor until my death.’

‘That means, Frederick, that you will set up quarters in the Palace immediately, and you will attend every meeting and discussion that I do.’

    ‘Understood, My Lord.’

‘You, Simon and I will be going over the economic and administrative review later. But we have two more important matters to attend to. Matters which, given my state, you may need to conclude. Simon?’

‘Yes, My Lord. The first is the Serenity Island Proposal. We hear through international channels that Japan is still stridently opposed. Some nations support Japan’s claim to Skull Island, and a number have come out in support of the Serenity Island proposal. Admiral Barboni has confirmed that our ships are currently not capable of reaching the island. And furthermore, we have never met these Japanese, so we have no way of directly communicating with them.’

Otto chuckled. ‘Communicate is an odd word to use, Simon. Anything I have seen of the Japanese response is simply ranting and threats. But more seriously, we of all people can appreciate their passion regarding the island. They are clearly a small nation; and they need land. They have never met us, so they know little of our people or our proposal for the island. And on reflection, it was a fairly ambitious proposal. It would have required a level of international co-operation I don’t think even you will see in your day.’

‘So, what do you propose, My Lord.’ asked Frederick.

‘To be honest, I am not sure Frederick. It would be good to talk directly with the Japanese, but we have no way of doing so.’

‘Unless one of our neighbors could act as an intermediary, My Lord.’ suggested Simon. ‘Perhaps the Khmer.’

‘Yes, excellent idea, Simon. Suryavarman does seem to know everyone that we don’t. Can you inquire please.’

    ‘Yes, My Lord’.

‘And now the other matter’ said Otto solemnly, as he gazed around the table. ‘It would seem that our peaceful continent grows restless. You have all no doubt seen the most recent public message from the Metals. This despite the Funglish call for a second Hastings conference. Simon, any updates from foreign affairs?’

‘No, My Lord. No one is at war with anyone else. The Americans are behaving themselves in the Western Lands. So, it is not clear what lies behind the Metal statement. The foreign affairs office has concluded that there are three possibilities. First, that the Celts, maybe in consultation with the Americans are pressuring the Metals in the west. Secondly, this may be diplomatic posturing by the Metals to mask an offensive move by them. And thirdly, there may be a possibility no one has contemplated yet.’

With that, the table erupted into laughter. Otto gently shook his head. Ever since the American fiasco, it seemed that the Foreign Affairs office spent most of its time trying to cover their butts. Otto looked at Frederick ‘We will discuss the Foreign Affairs office later as well. But now I am more concerned that we are ready regardless of which way this may go. Admiral?’

Admiral Barboni was a stout individual, with a kind, peaceful look on his face. However, he was known as an excellent leader, superb sailor, and solid tactician. The navy had prepared well under his guidance.

‘We still have two galleys ferrying troops to the Western Lands, until that matter is finalized, My Lord. The remainder of the fleet is in home waters, and can set sail with a days notice.’

‘Excellent. Thank you Admiral. General. Our defenses?’

General Rickard van Heusten was as tall as the Admiral was stout. Also, he seemed to carry a constant scowl on his face. But, he too was an excellent leader. And perhaps most importantly, he was, unlike many in the military, a good innovator. This was critical given the various technological achievements of the last number of years. Technology that was directly applicable to military uses. He had personally overseen the development and training of the 1st Holy Roman Elephant Regiment. And long bows were scheduled to replace the short bows in use by the numerous archer regiments. As with most things in the military, gold was the limiting factor, but the Palace was doing its best to meet his needs. The recent statement by the Metals could quite possibly expedite the flow of funds.

‘My Lord, the army continues to prepare. We need to upgrade more archers with long bows, or even the new cross bows, and as I have already tabled, this requires funding. And technology to upgrade our axe regiments would be greatly appreciated, My Lord.’

‘Yes, I understand, General. And in the Western Lands, are we returning our troops to the south of the peninsula? And is our settler well protected?’

‘Yes and yes, My Lord. ’

‘Well, we will discuss your requirements with the head of the treasury. We have limited funds, as you are aware, but we will see what we can do. The Minister of the Interior also advises that walls around key cities can be built in very short order. It is something we may want to attend to earlier than later.’

After a lengthy pause, the Emperor continued, ‘But I think we should take these preparations very seriously. We all know our nation’s history and the citizens of Prague even more so.’ After another pause, ‘General. Admiral. Thank you for your time.’

As Barboni and van Heusten bowed to the Emperor and left the room, Frederick was left with the nagging feeling that the Emperor had left something unsaid. Maybe it was just his imagination. Maybe it was the Emperor’s poor health. But the meeting turned to other matters, and Frederick’s attention focused on the business at hand.

Warning shots were fired on Iron Maiden today. The intent of the Celtic nation is not to fight with the Metalheads but come to an amicable solution regarding Iron Maiden. Due to miscommunication in our ancient history, borders were never clearly established. The Celtic people feel the sharing of the lands around the sea should be given to all within the proximity. However, the Metalheads gobbled up all of the beachfront property on the southern and western shores thus preventing America and Celtia from obtaining necessary resources.

The Celts offered what we thought to be a reasonable solution, but the Metalheads scoffed at the offer. The Celts hope to meet with the Metalheads and remedy the situation with no blood loss.

The Piercian Empire in the year 1220
Extract from the first issue of the Kor'Shi, 1220

[...] so that now we can proudly announce the creation of this first Piercian Newspaper. The printing press allows massproduction of this writing, and the Kor has been charged with it's distribution among the population. It is free for all to acquire. This is the true Kor'Shi (victory of the air caste), widespread information for the whole Empire.

The merchands and scientists of the Por have already announced that they would use the printing process for their respective needs too. It truely is a groundshaking discovery.

In this first issue, the Piercian people themselves will be what we talk about. Everyone knows about the caste system we live in. But until this day, only a few knew about the distribution of the population among the five castes. Recent studies have given the following results :

        - Fio : 46 administrative units, or 38% of the total population.
        - Por : 38 administrative units, or 31,4% of the total population.
        - Shas : 22 administrative units, or 18,2% of the total population.
        - Aun : 8 administrative units, or 6,6% of the total population.
        - Kor : 7 administrative units, or 5,8% of the total population.

The total population counts 121 administrative units. Those units vary in size but count at least 3000 Piercians, depending on their purpose.

The Aun'O commented as follows : " Our caste system works well, but the current proportions don't fit what we expected. The creation of the Kor'Shi will be a first step to enhance the influence of this important part of our society. Next, we will invest a little more in naval infrastructure and vassels. The city of Por'Per will one day become a jewel of commerce even if by now it's only a village in the middle of the western jungles. The Fio will have much to do in Rough Kho'Per, once the initial phases of settlement are accomplished. The Shas is clearly in undereffectives. The peaceforce that will be sent to Cumae shall increase their numbers. The Aun at last, is almost overcrowded, but I guess all of you know just how many bureaucrats we have out there, hehe." [...]

          To: The World
          From: Ozzy the Bateater
          Subject: War!

Let the world know that these are no mere warning shots. The Celts have declared war. American stacks menace our borders as well.

The Holy Roman Empire has amassed a huge army on our eastern borders poised to assault our second and third oldest city. An army bred for destruction.

We call out to all who can hear for aid. The Metalheads are alone, surrounded by enemies on all sides. Enemies who, without any warning or communication whatsoever, threaten our very existence. Without even a formal declaration of war the Celts have begun an assault on our city. The Celts claim they have no desire for bloodshed but bombard our citizens!

They spread lies, break promises and start wars!

The ancient agreement was crystal clear. There is no room for miscommunication as they claim. The border agreed to by both sides was distributed by Metalhead mapmakers and diplomats and agreed to by the Celts:

This border was exceptionally generous to the Celts, they have no reason whatsoever to complain. Especially not thousands of years later. The east-west division line is exactly between the borders of our capitols. Yet it did not continue straight down, it gave even more land to the Celts. Considering how little land that left us to the east of the line, due to the large body of water, it was shocking to hear the Celtic hostile demands for our city of Iron Maiden.

This proposal gave the Metalheads room for two cramped cities and many for the Celts, yet they demand one of our cramped cities and declare war over it.

As tenuous as their justification for war is, at least they have attempted one. The Metalhead diplomatic corps have heard no such words from the Americans or Holy Romans.

This lopsided war of conquest and greed is an insult to all nations of this planet.

Thus we call on all nations, especially the powerful Khmer to our south, for aid.

The Metalheads have been ganged up on without cause or warning. We plead with all civilized peoples on this planet for assistance in putting down the menace we face.

Suryavarman 1 is most distressed of news of war just north of us. It has for a long time bothered the Khmer that its norhern neighbours are so cramped yet the southern neighbours have so much land. It puzzles Suryavarman 1 that the Metal heads and HRE did not more quickly expand down the southern eastern strip that Khmer left vacant. Now generations later it is the Inca who spread north up this strip yet they have a significant unsettled jungle area, rich in resources, that is only just starting to be settled.

"Northern friends of Meduian*, I have a plan. It is a secret plan and the nations of Metal land, HRE, America and Celt; as well as the Funglish MUST speak all together if possible of this. It can form part of the Hastings agenda. I'll send you all a quick communique some time later today outlining the idea which would bring about peace.

            Great tidings."

                The Hovel Report

                WAR!

A state of war now exists between America and Metalheads.

We stand beside our Celtic brothers in support of their claim to the port of Iron Maiden.

We hope the Celts and Metals come to an agreement on their land claims as we have no direct quarrel with Metals (although we question their move north when land seems to exist to their south). However all said Roosevelt II made promises to Brennus at a recent meeting hence we must honour that agreement, and support our allies as they supported us in times of need.

Ozzy finds it curious that when America requested we settle no further north, we agreed to it. But the Holy Romans took land America was about to settle and instead of anger towards HRE, America directs their anger towards us.

The Americans find it curious that despite your promise Metalheads, we find on the shores of our far eastern lands a settlement! Things that make you go hmmm.

We greatly appreciate your concern about our relationship with the Holy Romans.

We have never agreed upon such land claims. Below is the letter we sent DISPUTING your land claims. You never responded to the contrary that our proposal was unacceptable. There was never an agreement by the Celts to your land claims.

                        Chief Ozzy,

I apologize for delays in responding. We have lost two different scouting expeditions recently to lions and we must choose paths carefully. I feel that I can support your western borders. I would propose the longitude of the most western coast of the sea your cultural borders overlap be our boundary. I believe the northern border of the sea to the south to be a good latitude border as well. For the time being I don't foresee our cultural borders touching for several hundred years.

Chief Ozzy the Bateater proposes a most fair and magnanimous border treaty between our two peoples. Our proposal is attached. You will find a border line drawn exactly between our two great cities. This is, we feel, most equitable. A peaceful agreement between our two peoples will allow us to focus energy in other directions trusting that one of our frontiers is solid and uncontested.

                        I urge you to accept.

Considering your spread throughout the continent, I think your proposal was not generous at all. While we struggle to get enough space for 4 cities, your civ has become rather expansive to the east and south. I do not believe there was any reason to squeeze in a city within two hectares of ours.

If you want fish that bad, we would gladly give you the fish and give you a lump sum of taxes we expect to collect over the next 100 years in exchange for annexation into the Celtic borders.

I encourage you to read Khmer's jungle mail. I believe he has provided an excellent solution regarding Iron Maiden. As this letter involves multiple people, I refrain from quoting it in public without consent.

                          Tyrimmas looked at the door.
"Archelaus......" he whispered... "you're back brother!"
                          then he continued: "Where's Aeropus?"

"Do you only care about Aeropus, brother?" Archelaus asked with a sinister voice.
"And why are you standing in front of the throne of Sparta? Who has crowned you king?" he said.

"Nobody did...." Tyrimmas tried to answer.
"So you did it all by yourself? And now you fear me because I made it back alive....." he said.
"I am glad you did!" Tyrimmas quickly said.
"I'm sure you do.... but tell me, if you're that glad that I'm back, then why did you send that assassin after me, to kill both Aeropus and me?" Archelaus said with much anger in his voice.

"There was an assassin?" the Chief of the Scribes said.
"The bearded scribe tried to murder both me and Aeropus!" Archelaus said, but he failed.

"I have sent the bearded scribe, not your brother" the chief said "but he was not an assassin but an..."
but before he could finish his line the chief scribe was killed by Archelaus.

"Noooo!" Tyrimmas said, "don't kill him! He's loyal to Sparta!" then Tyrimmas kneeled down next to the chief.

Archelaus immediately approached Tyrimmas and said: "So brother, that is how you ascended to the throne of Sparta! By plotting together with the scribes against me and Aeropus! You have succeeded in killing Aeropus but..."

"NOOOOoooo!" Tyrimmas said "Noooo, Aeropus can't be dead!" quickly Tyrimmas raised to his feet again but before he stood again Archelaus stabbed his knife into Tyrimmas heart. "Traitor" Archelaus said.

Then an uproar started in the back of the throne room.
The bald scribe and the old scribe protested.
"You are the traitor! Traitor to Sparta, we will not let this happen" they said.

Archelaus turned to them, drawed his sword and said: "I am the heir of Alexander, son of Perdiccas, I have cleaned our kingdom from weak and honourless descendants of Alexander. Do you want to deny my claim on the throne?" he asked with blood-red eyes.

The scribes stepped back. They hesitated.
The young scribe stepped forwards and kneeled in front of Archelaus: "Tell me what to do with these traitors my lord" he asked.
                          "Kill them" Archelaus said.
"I am not trained to kill mylord" the scribe said.
"I'll do it myself then!" Archelaus said, and with one sweep of his sword both military untrained men were decapitated.

"Anybody else wanting to deny my claim on the throne of Sparta?" Archelaus asked, while facing all that were present in the throne room.

"No sir, we will follow you and we will obey you!" they said.
Then Archelaus picked the crown from the upper throne, handed it to the Young Scribe and said: "Chief of the Scribes, crown me now!"

The young scribe's face showed his proud, he grabbed the crown and putted it on the head of Archelaus, who didn't bow down an inch.

"Archelaus, son of Perdiccas II, brother of Alcetas II, son of Alexander, I crown you to be the King of Sparta, to lead our nation in honour to a respectable future! We will obey you!" the new chief said.

Then all people applauded Archelaus, who walked to the doors. In front of the palace many people had gathered, hoping to hear something about Aeropus.
When Archelaus appeared, crowned with the crown of Sparta, they cheered: "Sparta has a king again!"
"A young king who'll lead us against the Romans!"

Finally, after the decease of Alcetas, a new king was sitting on the throne of Sparta. not an old king or a scribe. Sparta had new hopes.
The way how Archelaus had begotten the crown were soon forgotten. Sparta accepted that strength and pride were acceptable ways to lead Sparta. Sparta doesn't need a weak ruler. They need a king to fear, to look up to, to lead them against their enemies.

The new Era of Sparta has arrived.
The Era of Archelaus. Later this era would be named the 4th age of Sparta.

                          First age: Lacedaemon
                          Second age: Alexander
                          Third age: Alceats
                          Fourth age: Archelaus

Those were the four great leaders of Sparta.
Honour their names for they have done great things!

But let's not be hasty, the age of Archelaus has just started. What will he bring to Sparta? Will he be able to finish the war against Rome?

First thing done by Archelaus was burying his father and his brother, close to the graves of Alcetas etc.
Archelaus cried when he buried them. He missed his brother. "But sometimes things must be done." he whispered to himself.

The Funglish Post Office still awaits the delivery of the Khmer missive.

PS: We accept that the Khmer name for our continent is Meduian, and use this name in trade and diplomatic settings. Indeed these discussions are often conducted using the Khmer tongue as a trade language. However in private, the Funglish people prefer to use the traditional English name of Avalon. One does not replace the other, they are simply translations of each other.

Frederick was surprised to be summoned back to the Emperor's office at this hour of the morning. From the looks of Simon the Younger, it looks like he was surprised as well.

'Good morning gentlemen' said Otto. 'I was going to raise this matter at yesterday's conference with the Admiral and General, but I was waiting to see how international events unfolded. Let me get right to the point. General van Heusten and I have been preparing an optional military plan for the last few years. For obvious reasons we kept it quite secret. The objective of that plan is to reclaim the Metal territory that should rightfully belong to the Empire and correct the historic unjustice done by our loud neighbors to the west. We were waiting for an opportune moment to launch such an offensive. And one has presented itself.'

'We have finalized agreement with the Americans on the hand-over of the Western Lands. And the Celts and the Americans have similar concerns with the Metals as we do. They have both declared war on the Metals.'

'Through a military courier, we have decalred war on the Metalheads, and as we speak, the General is crossing the Metal border in two places. '

'We now need to respond to the public squawking coming out of Black Sabbath, and, our good friend Suryvaraman has tabled a peace proposal that needs some serious consideration. We need to do this quickly, as General van Heusten's artillery regiments will soon be readying their catapults. Simon, you start working on my response to the Metals, and Frederick, here is the Khmer proposal. Let's get to work!'

Simon and Frederick answered in unison 'Yes, My Lord!' and Frederick, still stunned by the news, was even more surprised by the enery of the Emperor, who only days before had been on death's door. He picked up the Khmer proposal and started to read.
