build mines on gold, gems or silver and work them
don't spread your cities too much

Well, it's a combination of those, you don't have to live up to all of them, but it's a first step to a big empire.
ok i feel a bit better,

        yes to cottages.
not got tech for courthouse i dont think. i better check what tech gives courthouses,
research rate is low, which is why my points are so low, i am falling behind the tech race, oh well !!

        • try using specialists. if you build libraries then you can assign city-workers to library specialists.

courthouses need code of laws. code of laws also gives you caste system. With caste system you can assign some merchant specialists in your cities to get more money.

Portugal has traded some techs already (reported 3 trades yesterday). That's about 30-40 points already. Maybe you didn't trade techs yet, that makes a difference as well. Since we use vouchers that means that you'll get to use yours later.

          • ok never used a specialist. will have to see what the pros and cons of that are too.

ok so long time till i get courthouses. probably another 1000 years at present rate.

No tech trades. dont have the tech to allow tech trading.

            • Specialists are great. In once game I was dead last as far a my Gross GNP but with all my specialists I was the leading commerce producer and as a result I had an awesome economy. You just need to have lots of food around.

Every damn extra city i get from the Barbarians cripples my gold income. so i cant understand how portugul doing it.

Bulgaria gives up 139 shots on goal in 82-0 women's hockey loss ESPN.com news services Updated: September 10, 2008, 2:09 AM ET

There's the "agony of defeat." And then there's this women's ice hockey score from the European Olympic pre-qualifying tournament: Slovakia 82, Bulgaria 0. That's correct: 82 goals for Slovakia, none for Bulgaria. The International Ice Hockey Federation said the result, from a game played Saturday at the tournament in Liepaja, Latvia, set a record score for a women's IIHF-sanctioned event. It was not the all-time record for futility, however; that is still held by Thailand, which lost 92-0 to South Korea in the 1998 Asia-Oceania U18 Championship. Slovakia, which won all four of its games at the tournament, outshot Bulgaria 139-0, scoring on 58.9 percent of its shots on goal. Slovakia averaged one goal every 44 seconds. "We took it as training," Slovakia coach Miroslav Karafiat said after Saturday's game. Bulgaria trailed 7-0 after 5 minutes, 19-0 after 10 and 31-0 at the end of the first period. The drubbing capped a woeful showing for the Bulgarian women, who also lost 30-1 to Croatia and 41-0 to Italy in earlier games. Janka Culikova led Slovakia with 10 goals, while Martina Velickova scored nine. Fourteen different players scored at least one goal. Slovakia, which also beat Croatia, Latvia and Italy, advanced to another qualifying group with Germany, Kazakhstan and France. The winner will secure a spot at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Bulgaria was eliminated after scoring one goal and giving up conceding 192 in the tournament. The Slovakian men's team clinched its biggest ever victory against the Bulgarians 14 years ago when they won 20-0.

                    • I and 99% of the Bulgarians never knew we had a hockey team, that just shows you how populer it is in Bg.

                      • Just checked a populer Bg Sport site, no news of that. I guess I and the women team will only hear of this.

So the quick one word sansers are insufficient and are attempts to be funny and put down one who is tryign to learn how to better his play by palying with the experts, but the experts dont like to others to learn.

At least cybers info was more detailed and out of his list all i missing is courthouses.

I wasn't trying to put you down. I was saying what I am doing, I just went for an early worker and build several cottages around all my cities. It may seem like mocking to you but if someone had said the same word to me in my last MP game I would have done a lot better.

                              Detailed suggestions:

                              Get currency

Open borders with everyone and build roads among your cities

Build libraries in cities with food resources and use specialists to tech and your budget to run your empire

Don't be afraid to use production for wealth or knowledge

                              Build courthouses earl

                              Pillage

                              • Well stating a one word answer to a curly question is not usuly seen as helpful

I had already stated to cyberss repsonse i build cottages.

I too went for esrly worker, but this was a negative to my start as i had nothing to do with the worker, couldnt farm, cottsge or buidl roads or mines.

So once i got him somnetihng to do i have used him and his friedns a lot.

Cottages are flourishing, but still not making money, yes i am working the tile in city cross.

I was surprised how some people have built so many cities and still making money whilst my own civ is struggling. I am regretting building some citys now, but i had to get access to certain resources such as bronze, silver, marble and horses. without the cities i would not have access to the resources.

now my research is slow so long time to get to Courthouses and librarys.

i did a quick guess and it will be 1000AD by time i get to techs required.

So i know i am terrible player and just seems i doing something terribly wrong that others arent as their research rate is so much faster.

I play this only to learn and to get better, but everything people tel lme to do i am doing and yet i fall further behind all time.

So i am missing something thay you people see as obvious which is why you not mentioning it. Everthing you tell me, eg. build courthouses is a much later activity ingame not now.
