Am I the only one who would like some advice on how to play civ4 from Portugal? I mean a score of 294! That's 100 more than most of the advanced civs and 170 more than the bottom civ! And his score decreased to 294, I wouldn't be suprised if he had hit 300 already!

Come on Portugal share your secret!

Perhaps it is time for Portaguls neighbors to even the score a bit?

Not even necessarily a military action... I'm sure if everyone broke open boarders (and especially didn't allow judism to spread) this would slow him down.

Although in my experience, for a civ to pull into a significant lead like that they often must neglect military to pursue other areas of growth.

Damnit, someone do something! Looks as if Russia is the only civ in that part of the world with any stones.

Portugal is only that big because for some weird reason Rome is giving away his best spots to Portugal.

Ok, Portugal is most probably also that big because he's a very good player.

i just cant understand how you can get so many citys and still maintain enough income to research.

Having never played at this level it is hitting hard to fund an empire.

Every damn extra city i get from the Barbarians cripples my gold income. so i cant understand how portugul doing it.

build a lot of cottages
put your city-workers on tiles with much commerce
build courthouses early
accept that your research rate is on 0% or 10%
build mines on gold, gems or silver and work them
don't spread your cities too much

Well, it's a combination of those, you don't have to live up to all of them, but it's a first step to a big empire.
