Random starting locations are divided into two catagorys, being "cool" and "hot". Cool would include grassland, plains, tundra, and ice with forests being the predominate flora, whereas hot would include desert, grasslands, and plains with jungle being the predominate flora.

This is to avoid Mali winding up next to a tundra area (notice I said "next to" not "in"), or Vikings in/next to a jungle. Now I realize we are not trying to mimic earth, but I would guess that MOST players would want a climate start at least somewhat close to the historic (I for one would).

I also would propose no attempt be made to culture linking civs. It really doesn't make sense anyway due to the distrubution (many europe civs, few orient/africa/new world).

As long as everyone else is ok with it, I also would not be opposed to making an "island" pool where the civ would start on a galley linked island (japan/england). This however might pose an advantage since any invading army would then have to ship its units across. It is really your guys call regarding island starts.
I missed some debate because my computer was down, but I totally agree with all of this.

    • My beef is not how good my start is but that i dont want to be places somewhere based on my particular civ.
Your beef is noted. Unfortunatly, the consensus is that we prevent backwards match-ups (vikings won't start in the desert, but won't nessisarily start next to tundra/ice either).

I think this is a fair comprimise.

Me too. I am working this week however so time is limited. I am going to try my best to finish it this weekend.

Does this grovelling get me a better starting position now?
Actually i'm german, but i'm correcting frenchmen about their french too.

But this one was really easy, since the words are the same in french.

          • I really, really hope that the top players voluntarily obeyed the agreement not to pick a financial or industrious civ.

At the very least, can Deity, Toni and I all confirm this here?

Ozzy - No Fin or Ind
            Deity -
            Toni -

Lz & CS might be in this category too, but I think me, Deity & Toni are the main ones to worry about, so we should be ok. Assuming Frank isn't playing, cause he'd definitely be in with Deity, Toni and I. Sorry to rank people...

            • I wasn't aware of this agreement - thus I have failed to obey it!

              • By the way keep in mind that i was one of the last to pick a civ - thus the majority had their chances of picking the civ i will be playing this game.

                • No problem - Everyone gang-up on Toni then.

On a serious note, I don't recall that agreement either.

                  • Ugh, figures...

Can you pick someone else? It was discussed for quite a while in this thread.

                        • That's not the point. The point is that Fin & Ind are extremely powerful and over represented in this game, and certain players are guilty of always picking those civs and using these powerful traits to win every single game.

You, Deity and I win or are on top of every single game. It is a bit unbalancing if the top players also pick the top traits. Hopefully you have some interest in at least pretending to balance the game a bit.

If you were one of the last to pick then that'll make it very easy to pick again. You don't suffer that much by losing a spot or two in pick order.

I strongly recommend you find another civ.
