  • Yes but who gets to decide if a civ is cool or hot?
    I do.

I don't want to play on a cold world.
Ok, for your peace of mind I will rename the two pools "hot" and "not hot".

    Happy?

This has my vote at least. I'd recommend each starting Island is no more than 4 units from shore (at the closest point) to allow cultural borders to touch (even without boats, the occasional swimmer might get lucky, or the native tribes might have primative canoes ). Plus they should have room for 3 or 4 (maybe 5 at the largest) cities. Thus no-one is forced to research Sailing in order to build their second city - they can research (or trade for) it when they feel the time is appropriate. Also, no Polynesia's - at least not as a starting location.

Other than that, stick to your current rules, and I'll be happy enough (IE I'll grumble but not complain ).

Also you can use SmartMap to tweak as well as mangle. So you could tell it to only affect forests/jungles and mountains (it can tell when a mountain range is detrimental to anyone and avoid that with ~90% accuracy) or only affect resource distribution (like clumping crabs around a river mouth or never placing a resouse where it is inaccessable).

      • that is totally unacceptable. the "not hots" are totally discriminated against. "cool" is... well, cool. and "hot" is also kinda cool. but "not hot" is just derogatory!

I demand equal coolness in use of terms...

but seriously. it's not the weather that I care about. it's water. perhaps a "Temperate" and a "Sub-Tropical" division would be better.

How does that sound? Not hot or cold, but an equal division into either temperate -> north, and a mediterranean -> equator. that way the vikings won't end by the jungle and the Mali won't end on the tundra, but there's still possibility for all kinds of randomness. and keep in mind, this is not a east-west split, so don't worry about traits. would all be happy with this kind of split? I feel it's a compromise that would be balanced and not too unsettling for those wishing for a near-earth experience while at the same time allowing the random-fans some joy. what sayeth the people?

        • and yes, islands is definitively a must. I suggest having island starts, cause not only is there historically a precedent for it, but the bonus of having easy defence is countered by the difficulty of expanding out AND reinforcing said expansions. 3 island starts sounds fine with me. but enough room for at least a few cities should be allowed. keep in mind that with Great Lighthouse and Moai Statues (and regular Lighthouse) in addition to possibilities for expansion, Sailing is actually a very good tech.

I also think this is a great idea. we should do it.

              • I think a 5 city site island is waaay too much.

Maybe a two or three city island as a starting location, but not three perfect fat Xs let there be overlaping. If we went with what some are proposing, island start would be overpowered.

And I think a max. of two island starts. Both about the same size. I think one should be near a continent 2-3 plots, the other should be farther away and placed in a "polynesia" of sorts. Note: The start island in "polynesia" would not be any smaller, it would be comparable to the first island in size and starting conditions but instead of being right next to a continent like Britain it would have smaller islands around it and the continent around 4 or so turns sail away. A hybrid of Japan and Borneo in that regard.

I'm still firmly behind my plan regarding civ distribution.

People that support me please post so.

                  • I don't agree I think to be fair to civs starting on islands, the island should at least be able to holds4-5 citys

For myself, I have no problem with how Heraclitus wants to set this game up.

But then again, I am easy.

                      • Ok, we've all said our things.
I think that Pinchak has read it, now it's up to him to make a cool map. We can debate on this forever, but we're with 17 players, we will never agree anyway.

I'd say: Pinchak, go for it! You have our trust! We have given you some suggestions, do what you think is the best thing to do, but keep our posts in mind when creating the map.

Tomorrow I'll post the way how we decide if we can play 1 startup sesssion.

But I don't think there will be a start up session Cyber. I think the best we can do is to get started as soon as possible.

I suggested room for 3-4 cities for the following reasons:
                                • 3 cities is about right to consolidate and think about your position before you move forward.
                                • A good island should ideally allow 4 non-overlapping cities IF PERFECTLY PLACED. Since most people would want to place a city and then explore, it's unlikely that the first city will be perfectly placed - leaving only enough land for 3 non-overlapping cities.
                                • 5 would be an absolute maximum, since any more than that would leave you open to people sneaking in and settling part of your precious island. you only have limited space until you can stick people on boats.
                                • You need to allow people to have a choice. If you limit the growth space, then players are forced down a certain research path in order to expand. Remember this is about interaction, not adversity (unless the player CHOOSES to be adversorial(sp?))
                                • Anyone who agrees with me gets a cookie.

I'm not try to restart the deabte here... I'm simply stating my reasons to try and make Pinchak's life a little easier.
