  • To be perfectly honest I don't know if there is a civ that started in tundra. Maybe just have start them near some better than average (but not super) tundra. That way they can choose whether to peacefully expand into it, or become the terror of the more civilised desert and temperate peoples.

In any case I would prefer cultural grouping to "zones".

    Perhaps have:

Far East (China, Korea, Mongolia (perhaps even put these in the plains, well if you aren't them ), that civ with the golden leader and Japan)

Middle East (Egypt, Sumeria, Bablyon, Persia, India?, Arabia)

Mediteranean (Carthage, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, Egypt?, Spain, Ottomans?, Portugal, France?)

Northern & Eastern Europe (France?, Germany, Celts, The Netherlands, HRE?, Vikings, Russia, England)

Native Americans ("Native Americans", Aztecs, Incas, Maya, and perhaps just to give them another civ "Americans"- people can invent an second ancient wave of immigrants to the region)

    Sub-Saharan Africa (Mali, Ethiopia, Zulu)

I think instead of making "monoculture" strips of land, make each region be similar to what it "on average" is on Earth.

Lets say sub-saharan Africa is easy. But Northern & Eastern Europe will range from normal temperate terrain to terrain near tundra (and one "island" start) Mediteranean will range from normal temperate, to well, mediteranean, to "desert", with the latter having only one start)

Far East (temperate, but perhaps with a tropical, stepp or "island" start)

Middle East (mostly desert start, with one "tropical one")

Now the interesting thing about this is that you have interesting scenarios, the Indians might start in a "mesopotamia" or the French might start in "Egypt" but most of the civs will by pure statistical propability wind up in land similar to the land they had in real life.

Once you see the civ list you can start planing which groups will be on which of the hemispheres. Don't be afraid to move the French to the northern group, or the Egyptians to the Mediteranean one, or the Indians to the Far east, if they are loner civs).

    • tundra won't be too bad. from what I hear the tundra will have so much deer beavers and crab that it will just be as good as starting in grass land.

      • Yeah, but besides vikings I can't imagine a civ that would make sense in tundra.

          • No.

            Northern Germany? No.
Netherlands? No, its next to bloody France.

Unless you add England to the list and define "tundra" much more widley I don't see how this could apply.

Russia? You could argue Russia, but in reailty they started more or less next to modern day Ukraine and Belarussia. I can swallow a "tundra" Russia, even if it makes no sense but the above two are pushing it too much.

            • Tundra.

Taiga, basically forest covered tundra in civ4 terms.

All the rest you might consider "cold" terrain would basically fall under pine forested grasslands (southern scandinavia, most of European Russia) or unforested plains (steppes).

Early tribes in the region where Russia "started".

Yes, this is what I had in mind for the most part. I wasn't going to bury anyone in ice.

For the most part, it will be tiaga for some civs. The starting position will be in a mix of grassland and tundra, with grassland to south and solid tundra/ice to the north.

As long as tundra/ice exist on the map, SOMEONE is going to have it as their northern (or southern) boarder. In my opinion it makes sense to have these civs be the ones from cooler climates. (Netherlands, Celts, Russia, Mongolia, Inca, Germany, Vikings)

You guys really just have to have faith in my abilty to develop a balanced and fun map. And if you picked one of the above mentioned civs, do not fret that you are going to get stuck with a sucky "tundra" start.

                I promase balance.

                  • Ok, but I thin that you adding the English to that list for consistency sake.

In any case I have full confidence in you. BTW You are going to group civs by culture right (kind of like the civ3 related civs starts)?

It would just be soo much fun to see civs that where togheter near each other. I think it was the whole reason this "region" thing was proposed.

This sounds ok as long as the Tundra is "Taiga". This makes sense for Scandinavia, and is acceptable for Russia and Inca.

Germany, Netherlands, Celts, England is borderline. Maybe you should talk to Ozzy about his "custom" civ. Maybe its a "cold" civ like the Vikings, Russians, Incas...

Also don't forget, we have two hemispheres here.... so the maybe the Incas could have some Native American company (looking at the map some Indian tribes must have lived in Taiga or "cold grassland pine forests" )

"cultural grouping to "zones" is TOTALLY boring!

Let’s have Pinchak use his imagination please, I fully trust him to make the best possible map.

                          You are misunderstaning the situation.

I never proposed "zones". All I wanted was "cultural grouping". Pinchack proposed to make a map with some kind of "climactic zones", I'm willing to play allong with this as long as the "zones" still have "culturaly linked" starting locations. I've tried to make posts to make sure that if Pinchack is making the map with zones that he makes the best zones possible.

And to be perfectly clear I really, REALLY want cultural grouping.

                          • I say we just wait till pinchak is done with the map to see how it'll look. I know you are all growing impatient cuz I am too but I think by the time he is done it wouldve been well wearth the wait.

                            • Well, we'll see the map as we exlpore it in the game. That is aways interesting, especially with a human making the map.

I guess I'm just so desperate to have cultural grouping done by Pinchack is because stupid Firaxis never made it an option in civ4*

*it was in C3C so it blows my mind its not in Civ4 BtS

                              • Yea, I say trust Pin. No one gave me instructions and I think I made a pretty good map. I'm sure Pin will do it well.

Personally I'm with Toni, lets not try to recreate Earth. If we ever want to do an Earth based map, then lets do it right and use an actual Earth map. We used to do those and I'm a big fan of them. But for this map, lets let Pin make it and be creative with it. Spice it up.
