  • hey all. yes. great session. and I don't think mali meant to cheat, but it was clearly a violation of diplocode and must be punished. i see a russian in that screenshot, Russia, you need to declare war on Mali.

    kidding.

mongolia has a point. as does toni. it was obviously not an intention of cheating, or a screenshot would not have been posted. but it did show that some players might be unsure of some of the unwritten laws that us old diploplayers take for granted. I want everyone to realize that playing on against AI after the session has ended, is absolutely illegal and forbidden. it's basically the same as looking at the worldbuilder, it reveals things that should only be revealed in session.

I want Mali to say they understand that, and I would hope that everyone who may have been unwittingly unaware of this restraint to be aware. and keep in character, so far it seems to be working great! lot's of IC talk, very good.

I loved this session, and looking at the map ozzy HAS done a great job. the map feels extremely realistic and offers a lot of exciting landscapes borders. again we must praise ozzy

also thanks to cybershy for his e-mail accounts and other things.
also, I would encourage all players to actively use those e-mail accounts. a great advantage over using PM's is the ability to attach files, and using those e-mails and not others will make it easy for everyone to keep all civs contact info manageable. msn e-mail accounts should only be used for IM during session. (or theoretically live IC diplomacy)

keep up the good work all!

        Thanks!

I'm glad you like it. I hope you all think it is balanced too.

        • That is a great map, Ozzy, nice work.

Also, I was talking to Toni about the tech trade thing, because I feel that 10 trade limitation is overly limiting to the game as a whole, and we were talking about other options possible to stop the tech blocs of games past that might be better and more realistic, and it hit me...

Instead of saying "You can only trade 10 techs" since that is fairly confusing (is that 10 techs or 10 trades? If I trade Gunpowder to Mali and then to Russia is that 1 trade or 2? etc), which is also unrealistic, why not make it a more realistic limitation?

I.e. Why not base it on time? I mean, the biggest limitation in any market nowadays for sharing technology is time frame, because entities want to hold on to their technological advantage for as long as they possibly can.

So instead of saying, "You can only trade X techs" why not say "You can only trade a tech X turns after you get it?"

To pull an arbitrary number out of my butt, let's say 50t. In 50t, especially late game, any techs that were of major importance, people would have already researched for the most part, leaving the "fluff" techs, like Music and whatnot, the ones not yet shared, or the only people without them being third and second world countries which would have little to offer, (as they aren't going to be able to share their high-end techs) in which case it wouldn't be beneficial for such trades to happen, unless they were gifting things such as Biology or whatnot to assist them (as gifting biology is a lot like food subsidies for poor nations irl) as you wouldn't give them guns and whatnot.

          Thoughts?

          Me.

          • I like what Asmo is saying - we need to find a way to stop whoring tech trades.

Also are you sure guys we want to not do the no top 3 civ alliance thing (top 3 civs can't ally, trade techs and resources?)

            • I just want to say I loved the game, it was great fun. I think I’m hooked on diplo. I’m only slightly upset over a few very atypical mistakes I made and the occasional lapsus. Next time I should really drink some coffee before playing. Hopefully that will keep me from making any further strategic blunders…

Ozzy did a great job, at first I didn’t quite catch what the goody huts on the peaks were for, besides decoration… pretty sly game steering Ozzy. I love the natural boundaries, I can’t wait to explore the map some more.

I was thinking, 10 is a bit inorganic. Why not have a wait period like Capo suggests.

I would strongly favor a “no alliance among the top three/two” rule.

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

              • Rhetorical: So how do you play past the last turn?

Don't tell me but I thought it was NOT possible - a new feature of 3.13?

Sorry Asmo but I really hate this idea. I don't want to keep track of 50 turns after each tech I learn.

Also, as in previous games I'm dead against evolving rules once the game has started.

                  Rules effect strategy.

I started this game knowing I can only trade 10 individual techs ONCE. lz has explained it quite clearly. There is no ambiguity.

                  PLEASE!

                  • lz better update us here but I didn't think there was any restriction on resource trading.

And I also thought the only restriction on the top three was with alliances, not tech trading?

                    ---

In fact you really can't change the 10 tech rule, which has been on the threads for ages now, because ALPHABET has a certain value. If the situation changes I've lost the ability to guide my tech path more directly to Alphabet (ie because a rule changes and is made more valuable)

                    • ozzy, the map is brilliant and quite realistic. The only slight criticism I'd make is that the resources seem too prolific... but time will tell I guess because of the way you clustered it

Just another point, although I like the idea of forcing civs to trade it does reduce the incentive for war, perhaps - depends on player behaviour an inclination to horde

Can you explain this mountain feature? I've not come across it?

                      • What is the mountain feature, is there something some people with knowhow can take advantage of and not others?
Something to do with hut on mountains?

                          • I assume I was part of the problem in the first attempts to start the game, as the file was uploaded to me on launch despite having the files apparently in their correct position. I have once again deleted and reinstalled the files, altering the method slightly, hopefully it works better next time.

                              • The pace of the game was good, it just sucked that we had to start an hour late, but that's what usually happens in these games anyway.

I'm looking forward to the next session.
