    Diplomacy Game (Diplogame) FAQ

This is the setup thread for the Diplomacy Game: History of the World XXI

History of the World 10 (never started)
History of the World 9 (Game ended)
History of the World VIII (Game is ongoing)
History of the World VII (Game ended)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of a Diplomacy Game is to play a game as if it's reality. You lead your people and your decisions make sence. Through story telling you bring your nation alive. You try to conduct diplomacy with other leaders. You don't go to war without a reason. (The reason may be that you're a cruel tyran, but set that attitude up in through story telling). We also try to keep the game interesting for all players. (no (almost) eliminations, no razing of important cities, etc.). Players promise in advance to stay in the game, no matter if they're winning or losing. The fun of the game goes much further then winning.

A key element of diplomacy game is patience.
No turn timer, we wait during sessions on other players, etc. Diplomacy Gaming offers a group of dedicated players that come together every Friday evening / Saturday morning, depend on each other, trust each other, and bring the ultimate civ experience to multiplayer.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

History of the World XXI will start most probably in the end of August / the beginning of September.
    The purpose of this thread:

    1. Get enough players
    2. Define the rules
    3. Define the game settings
    4. Define the session times.

    1. Players
Since this game is the game following HOTW VIII, the players of History of the World VIII will get priority for this game.

    Number of players: 9-13

    2. The rules
We play with Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (not yet released)
    Open for debate

    3. The game settings
    Open for debate

    4. Session times
Open for debate, but I suggest we use the HOTW VIII timeslot. (every friday 23:30 - saturday 03:00am)

      3. The game settings:

      I suggest:
      - No Tech Brokering (new BtS option)

      - No city razing (perhaps more realistic)

      - Continental world (3 civs per continent?) for more interesting alliance forming and tech trading (and for something different for a change)

      - Normal settings

      - All win options enabled

I'd like to play provided certain connection issues can be resolved.

Hey Pinchak, great to have you back!

By the way we were able to resolve the con issues, we play now through the gamespy lobby and all has been very smmoth so far Pinchak. It would be really nice to have you back playing.

Ok the 1st thing i would say lets go EPIC speed this time. My idea is that we cut the time span of the game, and try to fit 4 games per 1 year. Each played for about 3 months. For example to start HOTW11 somewhere during August and end Nov, then start a winter diplo game so we can accomodate some players who could not join us in HOTW11 (Like Mike & Ozzy) two very important players!

Time slot i agree with CS we use the usual one!

Now about the tech trading issues, why don't we go no tech trading at all, you see having techs to trade has been the main reason for us to be stick in alliances.

Map size i would be ok with large (or maybe bigger)

About picking civs i say we use the HOTW8 way, categorize all players by their skill and let the weakest player pick 1st. I think this is fair to everyone. Equal things out.

I think the HOTW8 was pretty reliable, so lets stick with only reliable players this one too.

Type of map i would say: If we go with Cont it may be a bit boring to some, due to not meeting other civs for quite sometime. And ending being in alliance with your cont buddies only.

I hear BTS has some cool sea units, so we should use that of course. So Terra would be nice. I'm also ok with a Pangea map. Lets see what ppl would like and we will make it work.

And last about civ starts, we should maybe use the HOTW8 as well. CS loads 3 different starts and gives us the saves, everyone has a pick at his civ and votes in order of 1-3 which he prefers (3 points for the best start, 2 for so & so (ok) for a bad start 1 point). Then we sum the points up and start with the one with the most points.

Regarding continents maps, perhaps BtS comes with cool new map scripts that offer a good diplo map.

It's true that contact is limited in the early part of the game (though we'll reach caravels soon enough).
I think it's not really sure that civs will allie up with the civs on their islands. There will be territory wars for sure. We didn't allie up with all our neighbours in the former HOTW games either, even when that was clearly the better choise.

If we go with no tech trading (perhaps a good idea) thee's no reason to allie with your neighbours b/c of the techs.

              Reasons for continents:
              - It's something different!
              - More naval action
              - Interesting continent vs continent wars (naval!!!)
              - More interesting alliance forming

              I think it's worth a shot.

              I disagree with Epic speed.
I think that the Marathon speed is really awesome.
The games take much time, but will be quicker anyway with the new found lobby connection. (We've spent at least 40% of the time trying to connect!! If we play like last friday, then we can suddenly speed up gametime with at leat 30% anyway!)

In the winter we may start half an hour earlier. (That's half an hour later for Kuno, since daylight saving has ended then)

I want to come. I will have to make time as I am hopefully going to have a job so my stories will probably suffer, but oh well. Honsetly I would make a rule change and vote for a different type of map.

Rule Change: up until modern times allow wars that destroy civilizations- civilizations rose and fell and were conquered in ancient times so this is realistic and it helps take out those that won't be powerful and thus not important to the game later and who may not have fun being unimportant. The risk for the person doing it would be in being characterized as a warmonger and never trusted by others who they have contact with at the time or even those they don't (japan and china suffer from this due to their past).

                Maps:
I've been playing a pitboss game on an islands map currently and I really like it. Heavy emphasis on navel battles, everyone gets generally good land and you are safer to build up in early times as attacks are very hard to make work.

As for new maps in BTS none really for diplo play some for general multiplayer but the events system and the new options are the best stuff for us there.

Why HOTW11? Why did you skip 10?

HOTW 10 is LzPrst's thingy, it may confuse people if we start another HOTW 10 thread. Then there are suddenly 2 HOTW10 setup threads. I think, despite the fact that HOTW10 never started, it's better to avoid all forms of confusion.

@Failedreality: You'll most probably get in! Some players of the former game already said they wouldn't be in this one. Great to have you here!
You are familiar with the concept of a diplogame?

@Ozzy: because I wanted a clean start of the thread without the junk of the 10 one. Why is it that important to name it 10

Going to try and learn more about it..

It isn't. But mark my words, if this game doesn't get started in the next two weeks I'm going to start a HOTW12 thread because this game didn't happen.
