I guess we'll be doing warlords (patched)
Which is probably good, since i need to practice a bit more bts for the new game mechanics.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I have now installed BTS and it works fine but of course I am still learning, practising and reading stuff about Civ4 and Warlords, nevermind BTS.
Anyhow, last night I joined a BTS game on GS using an island map: one civ starting alone per island (there may have been more islands to discover). Oh and no barbs.
It was great fun. There was a nice period of time to research and develop and build, without worrying about barb attacks. Each island had an exclusive share of key initial resources, copper, iron, stone, ivory, horse and fish and animals and specials So no obvious need to chase bronze etc:
The small island set up (it could accommodate, what, 8-10 cities), shifted some emphasis from cats, axemen, chariots and War elephants to sea based prowess.
My coastal cities got blockaded by a fleet of plundering privateers.
The point being that with each civ starting on an equalled resourced island, all the players got to use and experiment with techs and units and changes, to a well advanced stage.
Apologies, if you guys are very familar with this set up in Warlords or earlier. But I enjoyed it.
If we were playing more than one night games, it might be ok... but what's the fun of MP if you can't get into it early... you might as well be playing SP
Eventually most all get to use later technological weapons and defence, rather than the usual SOD. Also it's a chance to explore the new Civs or leaders and the remodelled espionage. Also the new marine units: attack sub, privateer and stealth destroyer amongst others.
To address your concerns it may be possible to use the advanced start so as to get into battle quicker.
Otherwise we all could play quicker and that's possible when you don't have to worry about a barb or Snoopy coming at you with a solitary warrier. .

Hey, that's the first time i've ever done that, compared to having it happen to me twice... so don't complain
Ming, Island games can be a lot of fun, even in one night games. They're a bit more fun played on Quick, in my opinion, but i'd prefer to play more games on quick anyway
They do ensure a bit more fun for all, as herc points out, as the uberagressiveness is eliminated, and everyone gets to build a decent civ without worrying about invading folks for a bit. When you get into the naval period, you can have pretty cool wars.
I'd really like to see us play a game, either on advanced start or on quick to make sure we have time to get to real naval warfare (ironclads and up )...
BTW I'll play a game tonight, I may not be here tomorrow or at least not until the late game, going shopping and such for hours.
