  • I couldnt beleive the number of cats that got thrown into the meat grinder with my jannisaries.

I researched pottery first and built a worker first to cottage the flood plains, so I had a good head start in GDP. I focussed my research and got hereditary rule, feudalism and bereaucracy early.

I think kbarrett should have attacked me early in the game while I was teching, He had a big power graph early on, and while he would have had trouble taking my hill cities he could have burnt all my towns, slowing my research, and make me focus more on defense.

Gibsies late game defense of kbarrett is a real pain as I dont get to expand cheaply with my advanced units, and could then railroad up to Gibsies borders.

    • Yeah, when my religion spread to Snotty's second city and I saw about a dozen villages/ towns that early in the game I was shocked! Although when I realised that the two cities were very close so all the cottages were being worked, it made more sense.

Knowing your neighbour's civ's strengths is always key in this game, I think it's probably why MD knew he might as well leave after losing two key cities and having mu UU (and Citadels) active. Janissaries are horrible to fight against, you can't even give your units the anti-gunpowder promotion unless you have Gunpowder too!

Here's a screenshot showing perfectly clearly that I gave DD a chance to negotiate with me:

I'm sure it's just a mistake when he's repeatedly said that I never spoke to him- and of course if he wants to use this experience to assume I have hostile intentions if he hears nothing from me, and to hook up resources quickly and garrison his cities more effectively, then it's not a complete loss

Yep, when the holy city went down the second time, that was the end for me. There was no reason to keep playing, just to spend another hour or so watching all of my cities fall (leisure time is precious to me, and I do not share the aussie fascination with fighting a lost cause for hours on end).

What I did learn was to never, ever offer Gibsie open borders again and to always regard him as hostile in all future games. Learning that someone does not regard open borders as a general peace agreement is valuable information, and it is well worth taking a loss in order to gain a lil wisdom. I have also learned to garrison border towns a bit more, even when I am supposedly at peace with by neighbors.

I have trouble with this MD.

I believe if we all commit to playing a game we should all play it out till the end to maximise everyone's enjoyment, including your own. I've never quit out of a game regardless of the odds against me. And my best games have been when I've fought the odds and come back. Many other players do this - Toni, Trev, Frank, Marcus, Alex, Vile - even playing to their last city if they can't recover.

Of course some games come to an agreed ending, but without players quitting.

By prioritising your own leisure time in this way you are making a decision that impacts on many other players' enjoyment - a bit selfish in my books.

It's not about 'me' but the 'group'.

And a big problem with the Rah games is that people quit just when it gets interesting and games don't resume.

But I'm glad to play with you guys all the same

          • For example, in that game where you were just about to kill Trev he never quit. He stayed in the game and battled hasrd. This is most intersting, exciting and enjoyable for both of you and the game.

The other thing is all the wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes. So in this game I attacked you (particularly when your peace terms with Trev was to attack me!). Then you quit when one city falls. How would you feel if Trev had quit as soon as you attacked him? We are not here to play AI.

            • It does affect the enjoyment of the game when people pull out of games not going their way. It is enjojable to win a good war, but in many ways more satisfaction is gained by not losing a unplanned war, when someone attacks. I will fight to the end, even if it is only to drag both of us into defeat so a 3rd party wins, I do not like to give aggressors the pleasure of winning.

I trust you will give me ten turns' notice next time we're playing and you intend to war upon me

                • I will give you the same notice that you gave me last weekend, Gibsie, but there will never, ever be open borders between us again.

                  • Yeah I like to stay in to almost the bitter end usually. (once your cap falls and it's obvious the rest are doomed, I can understand how people can lose interest)

Last game was an exception. It would have been better if i had stayed 10 more turns to let trev finish me off but I was really getting exausted and I apologize.
You must remember that it may be afternoon for you guys but it's 2 am for us. Which is no excuse but if we've been drinking for 8 straight hours.

I never had a chance the entire game, and to make it worse my two wanderers got killed so there was the one stretch where the response time was really bad early and i was building a settler. My turn would consist of hitting the enter key and waiting 3 minutes for the turn to end. This went on for 45 minutes. My cap was generating only 14 beakers even after I switched when getting civil service. Most pathetic capital ever. I was considering changing it but it requires 4 cities and 120 shield. Fortunately I kept getting tech from huts, including metal casing which was enough to provide a little hope. And the second I completed my first couple of macemen and thought I might finally get a few yucks out of the game, trev attacked. I had neither the money, pop, or time to mount any kind of defense.
I had stuck out an awful game that long but that kinda put me over the edge.

I'll be better in the future if you give me another chance.
But it would be nice to resolve a little of the lag problem.
It's makes it tougher when you having a real bad game to wait knowing that you'll probably not get enough turns in to possibly turn it around.

AND MD, you should know better with GIBSIE.

                        • I am not working tomorrow, so I will generally be available to play on Saturday. Maybe it will be possible to play some of the games started last week, Snotty, Gibsie, Kbarrett, are you going to be around?

                          • I've learned my lessons about GIbsie too MasterDave. In that same game - we had agreed not to attack each other and actually did a trade. Then as soon as he got chariots he attacked me. Well before he attacked me when I saw them he said he was just looking around with them. Then he attacked me.

Kind of the Adolph Hitler strategy in Barbarossa.

                              • Sorry, i've actually got a bucks night starting Sunday afternoon and then the actual wedding to attend the following Sunday so I won't be available for the regular game just yet.

The 4-way game I'm free to continue on monday night, probably wednesday and thursday nights too.
