HOTW7 Set up thread

    I still have to buy Warlords, I'll do that when I'm back from my holiday. I wonder if my test version works for playing as well

      • Tech Trading:
        Yes, although if we restricted to use of tech trading we could make it more interesting. Maybe if we allowed things like alliances specifically for the pupose of pursuing different tech paths, then trading to make up the difference, but disallowed random "Let's see what they've got now" type trading... it might keep people happy.

        When to Play:
        Not bothered, but late evening BST is better for me than early morning (so somewhere around 11:00pm to midnight sort of time as opposed to 2:00am onwards).

        Victory Conditions:
        All, what's the point in playing Civ if you can't backstab your way to victory, and still have multiple fallback plans (that don't have to be war).

        Yes, all the way. When tied in with www.civstats.com, you can pull a heck of a lot more detail from the game, that can be used to backup what is already used.

        • HOTWV GT + 2.5 or so would work best for me.
          We should have all Victory conditions, purely for variety in strategy, and HOTWV worked perfectely with the whole space race, and how everyone was sabotaging each other, etc.

          • for victory conditions I meant, do we want to implement a point structure like we discussed elsewhere? We should finalize that before the game starts.

                • I'd like to play, but the old HOTW5 time slot got eaten by work. I can do a later start on weekend days (friday by 8cst, sat by 7cst, and sun by 5cst.) Im also open in general during the week. Let me know what you guys work out.

                  • I started up a huge terra map, and it is easily the most interesting map I've ever seen. Really cool looking. So I would LOVE to try it. But it really is quite big, so I'm gonna say if we do a huge map we should have a MINIMUM of 12 players. Thirteen or fourteen would be perfect imho.

                    • Big maps with less people can be quite fun, although a lot less interaction early on.

                      However, by enforcing the Old World / New World concept of placement, you can counter the problem of not meeting anyone for ages.

                      Also, I prefer completely random maps myself, and they can produce some spectacular results, particularly SmartMap - which does work with Warlords by default.

                        Not sure what civ to pick, Can I use the Civ4 criteria? Or is Warlords way different? Any advise please.

                          Based on Civ4 I'll go for Victoria = Fin/Exp.

                            • The leader traits have all been rebalanced, deity... Vicky is Imperialistic now (can't remember the other trait).

                              • Edit: My mistake... I misread the CivFanatics chart. Expansive has been replaced by Imperialistic for Victoria. Her other trait is still Financial.

                                And I'd already claimed England, although there shouldn't be anything against using different leaders. Out of Victoria and Churchill, I'll take whichever one you don't take, although I prefer Victoria as her traits have a more obvious effect within the game.

                                EDIT2: Since the Imperialistic trait offers a boost to settler production, I'll go for Victoria over Churchill... Sorry deity.
