true. but the threshold for sneak attack resembling manouvers should be higher in diplogames. frankly I suspected the AI would declare war one me with their hostility and military buildup. that you might be inclined to do so as well since you had an army to start with was suspected, almost expected. the religious difference card was played, but as you mentioned it was to be understood between the lines. luckily I'm bright enough (or paranoid enough) to suspect that what may be threats between the lines is in fact a clear warning of impending invasion

Religious war between the Mali/James and the Arabs/Russians was nice and quite close to the RP of the game. Especially the Russian kings that has had a strained relationship with the west for millenia (an inevitable war was mentioned in a Rusiian letter even)
