Short DAR, got Gunpowder to get me into Renaissance then went straight for Chemistry then Steel to put me in the Industrial Age. Next DAR should be huge though.

    DAR Record, links work:

1300 A.D. Gunpowder is finished bring us to the Renaissance Era. Yay, we start on Chemistry (8 turns) Has anyone gotten Liberalism. Man this game is weird, everything seems really slow and easy, dunno what it is.

1380 A.D. Assault Army is at 7 Knights, 1 Maceman and 5 Catapults. Once New York is done with the Heroic Epic, Grenadiers will pour out of it, making mostly Grenadiers at other cities too. Chemistry it done now (obviously) and starting on Steel (13 turns)

1530 A.D. Word crashed, lost some stuff. Basically I got Steel (and am now in the Industrial Age) and started on Printing Press. I declared war on Izzy today and now the war commences. I am going to raze Valencia and capture Salamanca all in one turn and then continue my wave of destruction until every Izzy city is mine. Oh yeah I went Theocracy somewhere during 1440ish.

      (continued from 3 posts up)

      Part 2 – DAR5, the Renaissance Era (1505-1655):

Soooo, there’s lots of rushing being done, and not much in the way of military action any more. The peaceful buildup of our empire starts – we should have the economic clout to really dominate the rest of this game.
1520 – Great Prophet in Washington! He’s heading for Seattle to build the Church of the Nativity. Meanwhile, the jungle around Karakorum and the rest of the former Mongol Empire is being cleared quickly.
1525 – The Church gives us 17 gold per turn. Nationalism discovered – Constitution taken next.
1530 – Heroic Epic builds in NY.
1540 – Hatshepsut trades her Gunpowder for my Liberalism.
1545 – Isabella cancels our Open Borders pact – she’s beginning to get annoyed for some reason.
Meanwhile, our settlers and galleons have founded a new city, Los Angeles, on a new continent. It was important we got there first, as there’s some fairly fertile terrain and a few resources on that little island to the SE.
1550 – Houston is also founded on the new continent – although without a military escort to begin with. A Longbowman is rushed rather hurriedly.
      1555 – Constitution discovered – Corporation taken.
1575 – Great Engineer in Washington – will rush Taj Mahal in Atlanta. Meanwhile, Christianity spreads to the new continent, and we colonize the little island with iron and marble on it. It may not be worth it, but if it means someone else might not have one of those resources, it might be worth it after all.
1580 – Corporation discovered – Democracy taken. Saladin cancels all deals with us, saying we’re his worst enemy. No need to thank me for giving you Baghdad

Meanwhile, the funniest thing happens. Toledo, the Islamic holy city, has Seen the Light, and wishes to join our great empire. We welcome it with open arms – religion is always good two city revolts in the same game – is this unusual?

1585 – Taj Mahal builds in Atlanta, and a Golden Age begins.
1600 – Hatty trades her Replaceable Parts for my Nationalism.
      1605 – Versailles built.
1610 – Democracy – take Chemistry. Civic change – Decentralization -> Free Market, Slavery -> Emancipation.
1625 - GA ends – not much happening right now.
1630 – Forbidden Palace completes in Karakorum.
      1635 – Chemistry -> Scientific Method taken.
1645 – St Louis founded, near the oil on the SE continent.
1655 – Scientific Method – Rifling taken. This marks the end of the Renaissance.

Things going nicely, the score has shot up. Don’t have time to put any screenshots in right now, may edit them in later

        DAR 5

1410: Ahh, a nice bit of information… a list of the most advanced civs in my game shows me in third place behind Bismark and Isabella.

1440: I have discovered Philosophy, and am now going for Liberalism. My catapults have begun reducing the defenses of Genghis’ capital. It’s only a matter of time now.

1480: nice! The fine folks in Toledo, a small Spanish settlement that managed to sneak in next to my city Yue-Chi via a galley and a settler, just revolted. If after the riots are over I gain the city, I will destroy it, as it has nothing around it that could help me at all.

1490: I make my assault on the capital, but have apparently underestimated the strength of his longbowmen. Attack all finished, I have knocked him down from 10 to four defenders all nearly dead, but I now have merely five units all licking their wounds as well. Fortunately, there is two knights and a maceman on the way.

1515: On the good side, I’m the first to discover Liberalism, and choose Astronomy as my free tech. I’m starting now on the Printing press to increase the gold on my towns. On the bad side, I seem to be unable to resupply my attack force with new units as quickly as he is rebuilding longbowmen to protect himself. My attack may have been for nothing :/

I also found Los Angeles in the far west on top of some wine, with iron to the north. The primary reason for this city isn’t the resources as it is simply filling out the empty land to keep foreign settlers away. I have the cash for it; even after I founded it I’m still running a surplus at 70% tech.

At this point I seem to have a clear lead in tech. I’m currently trying to decide if the switch to free religion is worth it. The gain in diplomacy from Elizabeth (the only one that isn’t Jewish and is starting to hate me for it) would be nice, as well as the gain in happiness and science. But, I lose the giant diplomacy gains developed with several other countries ( +9 to Isabella, +4 to Bismark, and +6 to Hatshepsut). Hatshepsut is the one I fear most: second in points, without that bonus she would be only cautious toward me.

I think I see my answer. If and when I can finish off Genghis and turn my attention toward Saladin, perhaps I can get her to join me against Saladin. She doesn’t like him, and currently she is willing to trade my tech for war against him. We’ll wait on free religion until I can find a way to pull that off.

        1535: Convert to Free Market.

1555: Founded Houston out near the whale in the far west, where the barbarian attacks were coming from. This should end them. Sadly, with zero production and a poor placement, it will be 30 turns before the Theatre is built that allows this city to expand to grab the whale. I’ll make a workboat elsewhere to be ready for that event.

1560: Printing Press is finished. Cash jumps once again. Even after founding the two new cities, currently I’m at +10gold / turn with 70% research. Starting research on Chemistry for Grenadiers, and to end Genghis once and for all. I have traded for a few other techs over the last several turns to help catch up some of the tech lines I have neglected.

1580: My first navel unit, very very late in the game for me. Because of the ample room to grow, combined with the ability to block off my neighbors, I didn’t really need it. But, I’m wishing I could see more of the game map, so my new caravel is going to go exploring.

1595: Karakorum, the capital of the Mongolian Empire, falls! My armies march in the streets in a parade. Unfortunately, no one likes us—it’s 10 turns of rioting before we can restore order. My units pile in to heal a bit before heading out to take Beshbalik to the east.

1600: Chemistry is done. Next up is the Scientific Method. This allows me to 1) make sure I have oil, and 2) work towards Phyics to get the Great Scientist for being first.

War Weariness is up to four unhappiness in many of my cities, and putting a strain on my ability to counteract it. After I grab Genghis’ city to the east, I’ll make peace with him for all his cash, and leave a single city of his between me and Egypt, since I don’t really trust her. Then we look to Saladin to the north, who I can now easily see.

Karakorum, once it stops rioting, will get a great merchant culture bomb, followed by culture items. The plan is to put the Forbidden Palace here to help with city maintenance costs. I should remember to thank Genghis later for the four world wonders already there.

1605: I changed my mind on the science, and moved it back down to 70%. I want to use the extra cash (+36) to upgrade my macement to grenadiers.

Ho ho, my first barbarian maceman! He has come up from the south, my last remaining darkened area. I have left it without sentries, to my detriment. The situation will be remedied.

1620: Isabella declares war on Saladin. Hrmmmm. I’d love to join in, and get Hap to join too, but I have so much war weariness! I shall do it like this—I’ll take Beshbalik, and after getting the free great scientist from physics I’ll try to get Fascism and create a police state. Then I kill Saladin.

First step? I think I can safely say I have enough money to switch to Hereditary Rule, heh. That helps with some of the unhappiness.

1645: With the discovery of the Scientific Method, I enter the Industrial Era. I start Physics for the free great scientist, and after I am about halfway through will start trading away the Scientific Method to fill in the many techs I’ve left behind. There are some techs that it seems some civs will not part with no matter what, however, and that is blocking the possibility of me getting any trades. After Physics, I may have to go back and grab Nationhood and Replaceable Parts, for example, two that I don’t have which unlock a lot of other techs, and two that my friendly civ neighbors still won’t let me trade for.

Happily, there is Oil deep in my territory, so I won’t need to make any grabs for it.

I am now 500 points above my nearest competitor. I am first in every category except Imports / Exports and the Approval Rate. This turn Genhis’ capital stopped rioting, and I set off the culture bomb to grab a few more tiles and bread. I’d like to keep as many of the 15 population as I can from leaving! After I take out Beshbalik, it will have plenty of tiles to work.

Religionwise… two of my fellow civs have adopted Free Religion so far, negating the positive diplomatic bonuses. I still have traded with them enough to keep them happy with me, but will have to keep an eye on it. Myself, I have not gone Free Religion yet because it sustains my huge good relationship with Isabella, who still holds the key to Judaism.

In other civic news, I have held off switching to Free Speech, because the plus 2 gold to towns seemed to be less than the 50% bonus to gold output in my capital. This is primarily because almost all of my towns are all around my capital. However, it looks like enough other tiles have become towns that it will be beneficial for me to switch. This will also help me reclaim tiles around Karakorum, with it’s 100% culture bonus.

And that’s it! I’m now in the Industrial Era.

Here is the situation around Karakorum, my newly acquired, formerly Mongolian capital city:

And here is the entire nation. You may notice that I never did get Toledo culturally. Hopefully with my switch to Free Speech I’ll get it for good and destroy it.

          Quicklinks
          DAR 1 4000 BC - 1520 BC
          DAR 2 1520 BC - 250 BC
          DAR 3 250 BC - 740 AD
          DAR 4 740 - 1390

          DAR 5 1390 - 1765

1420 - Built Globe Theatre in Washington. Also, St. Patrick built the Masjed-al-Hared in Seattle.

1450 - Isabella asked us to help destroy Genghis. Since we now had significant troops on the border, we agreed. Here was an opportunity to patch up relations with Izzy, and gang up on Genghis at the same time. Too good to pass up.

1470 - A caravel was built in Portland. We sent this to explore the ocean to the southeast.

1480 - Captured the heavily guarded walled city of Ning-Hsia on our northern border. Renamed to Jacksonville. We lost a number of horse archers and war elephants in the battle, but killed a number of longbowmen and macemen at the same time. And our barracks and forges were producing more armies at a rapid rate. As a bonus, we captured three workers from the new city.

1490 - The war was going well. A Mongol outpost named Old Sarai was captured and razed to the ground.

1500 - Isabella agreed to open borders with us. Excellent!

1500 - Discovered an island across the ocean to the east, untouched by civilization. Made plans to build an explorer.

1505 - The Spiral Minaret was built in Washington. Genghis launched a big attack, starting with a heavy catapult bombardment on our armies that were massing near Turfan and Karakorum, and my troops were outnumbered and destroyed.

1510 - Chicken Itza was built in New York. Francis Bacon was also born there, he joined the Academy as a Great Scientist.

1525 - Signed peace with Genghis Khan, for now. He paid us 100 gold as part of the deal.

1530 - One of our caravels met a ship of England. We established cautious relations with Queen Elizabeth.

1535 - Our explorer landed on the new island, and began to explore.

1540 - we became the first to discover Liberalism.

1580 - Isabella asked us to convert to Buddhism. Hmm. We have other plans - our missionaries were now spreading Judaism in Spain.

1580 - Implemented reforms. Adopted Free Speech, Serfdom, and Mercantilism.

1590 - A great prophet, Mohammad Shah, was born in New York. He joined the city as a specialist.

1590 - Discovered England, and began trading our corn for their fish.

1595 - We became the first nation to circumnavigate the globe.

1605 - Isabella obviously didn't appreciate me spreading Judaism in Spain, and cancelled open borders.

1605 - A great merchant, Pythaes, appeared in Washington. He joined the city, stimulating the economy and bringing gold into the coffers.

1625 - Another great person - Imhotep, a great engineer, born in Washington, also joined the city.

1675 - A great scientist, Galileo Galilei, was born in New York. He travelled to Washington, and formed a second Academy there.

1700 - More reforms. We adopted Representation, Free Market, and Free Religion.

1745 - We constructed Oxford University in New York. This city was now a technological superpower all by itself (272 beakers/turn)

1765 - Discovered Steel, and entered the Industrial Era. Mmm, cannons.

Renaissance discoveries were made in this order: Discovered Engineering, Education (1515), Liberalism, Astronomy, Guilds (1560), Banking, Economics, Nationalism (1635), Replacable Parts, Constitution (1695), Gunpowder (from Bismarck), Corporation, Rifling (1730), Chemistry, Steel

At the end of Renaissance, our score is 2618, 900 points or so clear of our nearest rival. We are still number one in all the major power measures, and have 27% of both population and area.

            1510AD: Germans have Cavalry too.

1515AD: A great prophet is born in W.! I didn't remember I had that coming. Nice, he'll build the Islam shrine, for some more money. Saladin somehow got a longbow coming in from the east, thru Isabella's territory. A knight dispatches of him easily.

1540AD: Chinook falls after some bombardement.

1545AD: bad losses, but we finally could kill the three cavalries and the grenadier that went with them. 2 or 3 suicide cats, still some dead attackers.

1550AD: Nationalism is done. Next will be Military Tradition, to be on par in military with them finally.

1585AD: Saladin landed 2 cavs and a catapult in the east. My defenses are weak, so I make peace for all the gold I have. Found San Francisco in the open space left by the Mongols conquering Spain.

1600AD: Military Tradition! Never again will anybody get 700+ gold for peace from me! Next will be Banking, for Replacable Parts. First, however, research to 0% for some (few) cavalry upgrades.

1610AD: Sell Divine Right to Genghis for 850g. Should've done that earlier.

1615AD: Finally I use the artist I got literally ages ago for a culture bomb in San Francisco, with the goal to flip Barcelona, which was first captured by the Mongols, then flipped to Germany. Also, Banking comes in.

1620AD: Revolution! Adapting Mercantilism, Organized Religion, and Bureaucracy. The turn after, convert to Islam.

IBT - Genghis asks me to declare on Isabella, what I accept.

1665AD: Replacable Parts. Next will be Rifling.

1715AD: Rifling comes in. Now going for Education. Spend 800g on upgrades to rifles on defense. Next turn I'll declare on Saladin again, to finish off his southern colony.

1720AD: Declare war as planned. The south is guarded by rifles, and even a cannon! Another prophet spawns in W., I'll keep him for a GA.

somewhere in between: capture the last southern colony.

1750AD: Education. Next will be chemistry, lots of Universities to build.

1760AD: A scout reaches Saladin's heartlands. They are filled to the top with rifles and cannons, no chance for my cavalry. We'll have to wait for grenadiers.

1770AD: Peace with Saladin for nothing. His homeland is very well defended, no chance for me. Without Genghis blocking off his troops, I would probably be dead by now.

1775AD: Chemistry comes in, next will be Steel for cannons.

1806AD: We enter the Industrial Era upon discovery of Steel! Those cannons will lead to Saladin's destruction... Research to 0% to get money for catapult upgrades and the final bunch of rifles/grenadiers, and within a couple of turns the army will march again!
On the peaceful side, we have banks and financial buildings almost everywhere, just like libraries and universities. Science usually at 90% with a 30g surplus. Next tech will be Astronomy. A while ago Genghis switched away from Theocracy, since then 4 of his cities have been converted, and 5 or so missionaries died in the attempt. Pretty resistant, those mongols.
