Who wants to play in a Apolyton civ 4 succession game?
I find myself constantly switching production in cities especially early game. I'll start building a unit or building in a city until the city grows and then switch to a worker or settler and whip the population in order to get those units built quickly. The reason is the city pop doesn't grow while you're making a worker or settler so I want to minimize the time spent producing them.
My points:
1) The basic rule of thumb is 1 worker/city. You should've had more workers.
2) Nottingham should've been south 1 tile. Then you could've utilized the gold, which early on will boost your science tremendously.
3) You had Wheel but no Pottery? You're a FINANCIAL civ. I realize you wanted to shoot for Alphabet asap. Next time get Pottery right after the Wheel and the boost you get in science/money will make up for time spent researching it.
4) Play to your strengths. You're financial/philosophical. That means you want 2 or more in worked tiles (cottages) and a city that either has a LOT of food for specialists or can build wonders quickly (or both).
Good expansion.
I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
done. didn't expand too much, but did quite a bit of consolidation and improving the infrastructure. i don't have time to write up a full report. i'll do it when i get out of work if it's a decent hour; early sunday afternoon if i get home late.
Great call on the academy as a +50% research bonus for our capital for the entire game is much better then getting just one tech also it was a good move to capture France's only source of iron as it not only hurts them but also give us a strategic resources we badly needed. Those cottages you built on the flood plains will surely start helping our economy soon though I think we need to build some more workers as right now we only have 8 workers to cover 9 cities and usually we're supposed to have 1.5 workers per city. Priority should be given to chopping forests to build up our cities, putting in a couple of farms per city to help keep our population going, and to create some mines to help increase out manufacturing output.
All in all a good turn given what you had to work with. It looks like the next ruler will need to be a consolidator roading the hell out of our empire, building improvements, putting buildings into our cities, and specializing our cities into different tasks. Deciding which specialists to put into which cities and what buildings to build where in order to support those specialists should be our next priority.
Of course that's just my opinion and the next ruler gets to do what they want.

Surprised myself you were able to turn things around so quickly. I know the Khmer are far away and small so they weren't a concern, but I had been worried about France's size & proximity for awhile. Most likely France was bribed to fight like you said before they were ready for an assault.
Btw, there's a spearman in the middle of the empire and an axeman next to the ex-barb/now Carthaginian city of Harrapan (sp) that haven't moved. For Thoth.

I'm working away at it. Should have an update by tomorrow night (plus some comments)
500 ad and we don't have a granary in the capital? Whooboy.....

Not sure how Theben saved the economy which seemed in the toilet trying to sustain 5 cities with $1 in income. What did you do besides lower the science rate?
