Ok, but that's a completely different issue than your poll question. I want to win every game I play. But I don't expect to. I get the idea that you were actually aiming the poll a little more towards the former than the latter?

I have a nasty tendency to quit if the start doesn't go my way. I'm also one of those players who like to hit regenerate map until the start position looks promising. If I get my first three cities up and running fast the AI generally can't stand up to me. Although there are those situations in which 5 of the AI's decide to declare war on my when I've barely researched Iron Working and those games are lost.

Either way, I do always expect to win and I have never lost a game that has progressed beyond the medieval era against the AI. I play emperor, win conditions usually being conquest and domination (games usually end around 1700-1800 AD).

      I voted 8 out of 10

As for me, I do not truly play in order to win. After all, when you win then all the fun will be over.
In fact, when victory seems obvious, I stop playing most of the time and restart.

I more do enjoy to overcome difficult cirmustances (however not impossible circumstances) and I do exept to lose almost all of my games.
I also try to find a reason for WHY I lost, then trying to avoid that during the next game.

When you play like this, though, then everything is always interesting! Securing a certain resource beeing almost irrelevant on easier settings might suddenly make all the difference.
A.I leader attitudes are suddenly of prime importance, as is choosing correct allies.
All random occurences suddenly are also much more interesting and tend to have a bigger impact.

Well you got me there although I should caveat the 10/10 vote by saying that I simply stop playing games that I don’t particularly like – I also declare myself the winner in other games before I reach the finish line having decided that the finishing of the game would be too tedious.

Now if we factor into the game, the chance that I would possibly lose some of these other games, then I might be much lower.

So that does it. I’ll give up on my current Immortal rush on Mehmed now and start a new game which I will play out no matter what happens.

I'd say 9/10 at Prince, something like 2/10 at Monarch, is what I actually win. Unfortunately, I expect to win 10/10 at Monarch.

Like many, I finish the vast minority of my games. I quit once the game starts looking boring/predictable/tedious, whether I'm winning or not. So, I guess my estimate of how often I win on Monarch, might be pretty far off. I did manage to completely run away with a Monarch game recently that I thought was beyond recovery at the time of Optics.

I said 5/10. I only play SP games. Once I figure out I will not be the winner. I see how much damage I can do to the Strongest AI player. And when tired of that, start a new game!!!

….and what will undoubtedly happen is that I get Tokugawa, he’ll have a freshwater lake start (or maybe coastal with no sea food) and there will not be a hill in sight. For food there’ll just be rice and Napoleon will control all the strategic resources.

I can see my ranking going down to 9/10 as I write this

Well, I expect to win every time, however based on my BTS HOF, I actually only win about 60% of the time.

3/10, I tend to do stupid things at the wrong time, otherwise it'd be a higher win ratio!

Also, Blake's AI is tricksy (but that's a good thing!)
But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

To those who say you abandon the game when things are looking down... personally I would qualify that as a loss.

yup. But those I abandon when I'm first in power, first in tech and no one seems to be pursuing culture, I classify as probable wins. I'm sure I would have lost some of them, but most seem like pointless mopping up.

I chose 4/10. If I'm winning more than half the time, I start to get bored/pulled into ruts because I'm not challenged enough.

I haven't really advanced much beyond Prince on BtS yet, (though I'm definitely winning more than half the games I start on that level,) just because I got sucked into that whole modding thing and have only been firing up the game for the last few weeks for QA testing. It is definitely high time I moved up to Monarch, tho'.

Truth be told, though, I'll probably stick around on Prince for at least a little longer once I get done with that project. I almost always play with "no tech brokering" enabled (and always Aggressive AI on,) and I've not yet managed to win a Space Race victory...mostly because I'm either losing completely, or because another victory condition comes up first. I think I really should win that one before moving on to Monarch.

FWIW, I don't always play out a game to the end.... there have been times when the game just looks like it isn't turning out my way at an early point. I "punish" myself, though, by clicking on "RETIRE" instead of "QUIT", meaning that the game gets recorded as a defeat and I have to look at it in my Hall of Fame screen (the shame!)

I voted 2/10. Should be 1 in 8 actually, considering the number of opponents, but I want and expect 1 in N with N players.
The result is I usually lose because I'm not paying enough attention to detail, and then lower the difficulty level and win.

I voted 7 out of 10. When I first started I would move up a level every time I won because it wasn't that challenging. I have lingered for a while at Prince though. I win about 70%-80% but usually find the games challenging and interesting at some point.

I like this win rate because I "usually" win but the outcome often seems questionable at some point making the eventual victory satisfying.

On lower difficulty settings, I would often abandon games that it was obvious I would win but am less inclined to do that at the current difficulty setting.
