I can answer that myself, now. The Overwhelm Doctrine rewards are:

          Harbors produce 5 gold or

[if you built the Manhattan Project] No nuclear weapons.

I turned events back on for my last game, after having it off the game before that. I had had a very irritating run of terrible luck (bad event after bad event that ruined a game completely early on) and I was through.

So lady luck swings by and grants me a string of great luck.

First I got great hut luck: 3 techs (mysticism, agriculure and... compass!), exp for a unit that boosted him to 10XP so I could build the HE very early (the unit was already a woodyII when he popped the hut), and some gold.

Then 5 positive events as against 1 negative:

            1 - +1 commerce for a tile
2 - a bonus to research (no choice, just here is 50 beakers). This was timely, as I was researching CoL for the CS slingshot.
            3 - tin discovered in a mine, +2 hammers
4 - Dynasty dies out, pick a successor! A choice of a free settled great prophet, merchant or scientist (?) in my capital. That was pretty sweet. It was also funny, since a struggle for succession would probably not be positive for one's empire...
5 - a "heroic deed" by one of my soldiers in a war gives me a shot at peace with Japan (no thanks!)

The one negative was a slave revolt.

So all in all, that's a pretty sick run of good luck. I'm probably screwed in my next game.

Did they ever make one of those for EU3? I'm still looking for a decent AGCEEP-style EU3 mod. :/

I got Swordmans Quest in one of my games. I built 10, giving each the City Raider promotion, and won the quest. The result of it? Each of my Swordsman got the City Raider promotion.

Yeah, when they give every unit the first of a sequence of promotions, they should give a higher promotion if the unit already has it (e.g. giving those Swordsmen CR).

Got one where I needed to build X stables... when I finished it I got a choice of several horse archers immediately, or all mounted units gain the sentry promotion, or all stables get +1 food.

If someone else beats you to a quest goal, do they get the benefits?

Like building x chariots. I got that in a game - and NO horses in sight! (And for you wiseguys out there, I had researched AH.) By the time I found horses on a distant island and settled there, the quest was gone.

It'll tell you in the quest description whether you can fail if another Civ beats you to building teh requisite number of buildings or units.

I got a quest to colonise no less than 13 landmasses (even islands would do) to demonstrate my Civ's mastery of the seas. All but one of the rewards were pretty lame.

I know that - I was wondering if another civ would get the same quest. Or do they just "happen" to build what you need to, and you lose out.

I don't know, I suppose it's quite possible for more than one Civ to have a given quest. I think you'll know for sure if two human-controlled Civs are playing at once.

I had the best luck in one game. I was playing as the romans, and was heading towards a swords rush with their unique unit. So first, I get the "cover" promotion, giving all my meele +25% against archers. Then, I got the "build 9 swords" quest. Like that was difficult for me! So I ended up with a big army of pratorieons that started out with cover and city raider and whatever I gave them from the barreks (usually city raider II). Those poor, poor Russians next door...

                                Yikes. That's pretty crazy.

                                Let's see... recently I've gotten:

                                - conversion of some cities to my religion (I paid to spread it to 4 foreign cities, which i was about to attack & capture).

                                - another instance of "barbarian horde" which really hurt me. 4 spearmen appeared directly on my border, marched straight in and captured a city. I was lucky, however, that my "core" region was safe, and this occurred out the boonies (in other words, occupied China). It took me some time to get a couple of axemen together and re-take the city.

                                - library quest (+1 free great scientist in capital or +2 beakers/library)

                                - all axemen magically get shock promo (lovely, I had no axemen).
