The solution I arrived at is to maintain a gold reserve most of the time, but drop it back to near zero right at the end of researching a tech if there are advantages to getting the tech a little sooner. That way, I have a good chance of having a gold reserve available if I need it to react to an event, but I don't have to slow down my research to do it. But that requires extra micromanagement, which helps explain why I find the situation annoying.

I just got an event that gave me the choices of:

Have my state religion spread to four of my cities at no cost.
That plus have it spread to one foreign city for 10 gold.
That plus have it spread to four foreign cities instead of one for 25 gold. I just wish I'd had the 25 gold; I was guessing that 20 would be enough at that stage of the game (410 BC, but with a good starting position that had me relatively advanced for that time).

This was on a huge map at Epic speed on Monarch difficulty.

          Speaking of tasty events

I just had a nice one in my current game (Prince, Epic, Large, 10 Civs, Continents, Domination/Time, playing as the Khmer )

"An artist in the frozen tundra near Frontier has perfected a means of crafting beautiful ice sculptures."

          The choices were:

          1. We are glad to see that the local culture is thriving (+100 )
          2. This is an endeavor worth pursuing. Fund an effort to master this new art form and incorporate it into the local culture. ( -190 , +1 free Great Artist )

Pretty easy choice, given I had the money, (despite a mini tech-race with Ghandi). The city was up near a frozen area, obviously, and I wanted the extra culture to expand the borders.

Last night I got a mine collapse, but was able to pay to avoid nasty consequences.

I got the wedding event, though I chose not to invest in it because I was about to invade the neighboring civ anyway.

I got one that involved finding ancient texts in a monastery, and I could either use them to boost research of theology (bah, I had no use for it) or give +10 culture/turn.

I also got an event that provided all my cannons with combat 1. That was nice, though I didn't really need it. Infantry, Cavalry & Cannons vs. Longbows/Maces/Knights. I know, I know, too easy. True - but I'm just getting a feel for BtS. Sandbox is fine right now.

Last night I lost a transport (empty) in the Bermuda Triangle! I'm playing the Khmer on Prince on a huge map - I think there are 17 civs at the moment (several created as colonies).

I like the random events. Watching them over several games, they seem to even out. They add a lot of flavor and the good/bad mix seems pretty even for both me and the AI. If you keep a sharp watch on all the messages scrolling by each turn, you can see all the events going on. I'm wondering if some of the folks who think they're out of balance may be missing some of them; I know I did for a while, before I started making a point of watching all the text at the top center each turn. And I agree with some of the previous posts - it now puts more choices into managing your budget!

              just my two cents,

              Leo

Combat I for all cannons does sound nice, yes. You'd never normally give cannons that promotion until they'd got loads of XP, but it unquestionably helps them if they are given it.
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

Agreed, +10% STR is a nifty bonus, even if I can think of at least 4 promos I'd want first. It's not earth-shattering, and that's good.

If the war was a closer affair, perhaps it would've been decisive, but I rather doubt it.

I got a hungry generals event. I didn't have horses, but there was some near Medina, so my generals hinted in that direction. I took the city, and when the horses became available, I got 5 nifty chariots for free!

I got the hungry generals event, lacking copper. I was pointed to a city on an island (two city island, same civ). I built a navy (galleons) and landed with grenadiers, took the city losing two grenadiers. My reward? Four macemen with no experience.

I was so annoyed I took four more cities from that civ.

A politically arranged marriage between one of our noblemen and a woman from a noble Chinese family has collapsed into feuding as the groom backed out of the wedding on the wedding day.
                          • Send condolences to both families and urge them to seek a peaceful resolution to their grievances. (Suffer a -1 relations hit.)
This was the second -1: earlier in the game I had a diplomat commit a faux-pas against the Chinese.

Why is there only one option? Shouldn't I have the chance to execute somebody to save face?

My favorite so far has been the "Overwhelm Doctrine" random event (should've ben called the "Sirian Doctrine" ) In it, your admirals task you to build an overwhelming navy so that you can knock down city defenses and land troops in an amphibious attack in one turn. You need to build/possess something like 3 battleships, 5 destroyers, 3 carriers, and 9 fighters, and you get an extra bonus if you happen to have been the civ that completed the Manhattan Project.....

                                I've had a struck a gold vein event. (Receive between 20 & 40 gold),
                                faux-pas against the Aztecs,
and tornato rip out an Iron Mine.
